London's finest bookshops My Back Pages, Balham 8-10 Station Road, Balham, SW12 9SG 020 8675 9346 Balham seems a fairly benighted place at first glance, with nothing but a sparsely-stocked WH Smith. But tucked away opposite the mainline railway station is one of London's best second-hand shops, called My Back Pages for the delight of Dylan fans. Inside, there's a small selection of new books, mostly cheap classics, and a huge selection of second-hand. History, classics, politics and psychology are all well covered, and fiction takes up a room to itself.Sean Clarke With Streatham and Balham served only by a couple of blighted Smiths and a few charity shops, Back Pages is great. Bookmarks, Bloomsbury 1 Bloomsbury Street, WC1B 3QE 020 7637 1848 Although it is a shopfront for the Socialist Workers Party, it stocks a wide range of books, both new and secondhand, that you are hard pressed to find anywhere else. I want to nominate Bookmarks. More than just a bookshop - a way of thinking and acting about the world. Gosh!

12 Greatest Science Fiction War Stories The conventional wisdom is, as Charlie noted, that BSG took themes of political darkness that Ron Moore had played with on DS9 and cranked them up to eleven. Having been watching some of both lately, I think I've come around to the opinion that I first read from Abigail Nussbaum- that while BSG is more unrelentingly grim, and the lights are lower and the characters drink and screw and wallow more (all of which makes for terrific television, don't get me wrong) DS9 's political fiction surrounding war was much more fully realized, less dependent on jamming headline news into contexts where it didn't necessarily belong, and was on the whole, much graver. BSG also was cheated a bit by being an "after the fall" tale, which is always something of trade between the immediate uptick in stakes you gain from Fighting for the Species(tm) versus the whole category of "on the raggedy edge" stories that can't be told because the die has already been cast.

Using the postal district system does mean that shops sometimes thought of as being in "Central London" will appear in the other districts of our guide, but then every system has its downside. To my knowledge this is the first attempt to list London's secondhand bookshops since Skoob's 2000 guide. We have found a lot less shops than were listed then, particularly in East London where there is now only one, and that's run by a charity. As TheBookGuide rarely gets the opportunity to visit the capital's bookshops in person, the task of maintaining up-to-date listings is a particularly difficult one, so I'm more than usually reliant on reports and comments from customers and dealers. If you run a bookshop in London, just complete a simple online form and you will start to attract new customers.

The Best Science Fiction Books (According to Reddit) Recently, someone asked Reddit for a list of the best science fiction books of all time. Being a fan of sci-fi, and wanting to expand my own reading list, I thought it would be helpful to tally the results and preserve them here for future reference. I've also included selected quotes from the comments, as well as my own notes on the books I've already read. PS: All book images in this post are copyright Amazon, and were retrieved using my Big Book Search Engine. So, without further ado, here are the Greatest Sci-Fi Books of All Time, ordered by upvote count: Dune Frank Herbert - 1965 "There's a reason it's the global top selling science fiction book of all time." - NibblyPig If you have a chance, track down the excellent full cast audiobook (unabridged!) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams - 1979 "I really love the cool combination of humor, philosophy, and sheer nuttiness of the entire series." - Scarbrow Ender's Game Orson Scott Card - 1985 Foundation Trilogy Isaac Asimov - 1942
