5 Differences Between Social Media and Social Networking

The differences between social media and social networking are just about as vast as night and day. There are some key differences and knowing what they are can help you gain a better understanding on how to leverage them for your brand and business. 1. By Any Definition Social media is a way to transmit, or share information with a broad audience. Everyone has the opportunity to create and distribute. On the other hand, social networking is an act of engagement. 2. Social media is more akin to a communication channel. With social networking, communication is two-way. 3. It can be difficult to obtain precise numbers for determining the ROI from social media. Social networking's ROI is a bit more obvious. 4. Social media is hard work and it takes time. Because social networking is direct communication between you and the people that you choose connect with, your conversations are richer, more purposeful and more personal. 5. Share your thoughts or add a comment or two.

Three reasons why the “experts” are wrong about social media mea There is an argument around the blogosphere that is DRIVING ME CRAZY. When it turns to the topic of measurement and social media marketing, many “authorities” flippantly rely on the “double standard” argument — If you’re trying to measure the value of SM, you might as well measure the value of a cell phone, the company car and the receptionist. One popular blogger and author recently said if your manager asks for the ROI of your social media initiative, you should ask him for the ROI of his pants. Their point is that you just need to accept the social web as something ubiquitous and necessary, so why worry about it? This is lunacy. 1) Never get caught with your stats down Let’s examine the argument that you don’t measure the value of a company car, or email so insisting that we measure social media is a double standard. At some point in the life of every company, there will be a financial imperative to slash overhead costs. 2) The fallacy of free 3) Measure what you treasure

Koldo (2) - Google Wave As we announced in August 2010, we are not continuing active development of Google Wave as a stand-alone product. Google Wave will be shut down in April 2012. This page details the implication of the turn down process for Google Wave. Stage 1: Google Wave is read-only -- January 31, 2012 In this stage, you will no longer be able to create or edit waves. Marking a wave as read will also not be saved. Robots that try to write to a wave will stop functioning. During this time, you will continue to be able to export your waves using the existing PDF export feature. If you want to continue using Wave, there is an open source project called Walkaround that includes an experimental feature to import all your waves from Google.

Identifying a collaboration platform This is a follow-up from yesterday’s post that the LMS is no longer the centre of the universe and Jane Hart’s post today on A Transition Path to the Future. According to Jane, Step One in this transition is: There are, of course, a number of steps on the transition path to a post-LMS future, and one of the first inevitably involves taking a good hard look at how your LMS is performing. Step Two, or a concurrent step, would be to look at how to enhance collaboration. First of all, collaborative work tools must be simple to be effective. The options then become: Open the LMS so it can be used in the daily workflowConnect the LMS to a collaborative work platformMigrate learning to a collaboration platform and minimize use of the LMS Given the nature of many LMS, the last option is the most likely. Use blogs to replace group e-mails so that information can be updated on a given subject/topic. The key challenge is merging work and learning, especially in the minds of workers.

A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his or her social links, and a variety of additional services. Social network sites are web-based services that allow individuals to create a public profile, to create a list of users with whom to share connections, and view and cross the connections within the system.[1] Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. §History[edit] The most popular social networking sites by country Early social networking on the World Wide Web began in the form of generalized online communities such as Theglobe.com (1995),[15] Geocities (1994) and Tripod.com (1995). §Social impact[edit] §Features[edit] §Emerging trends[edit]

How to Get Employee Generated Content...

The Org Structure of Enterprise 2.0 I’m lucky to be a member of the 2.0 Adoption Council, founded by Susan Scrupski. As a member, I have access to a plethora of sharing, information and intellect as it relates to how individuals are driving Enterprise 2.0 in their respective organization. Naively, it donned on me recently that the members come from everywhere in the organization; IT, Learning, HR, Consulting, Customer-Facing and even Social Media specific teams. And then it struck me – the Org Structure of Enterprise 2.0 should be exactly what Enterprise 2.0 calls for, which is a cross-functional, collaborative, open and seamless environment that enhances organizational innovation, productivity and engagement. But what should that look like? Andrew McAfee, in Enterprise 2.0, New Collaborative Tools For Your Organization’s Toughest Challenges pens the following: Most of the tools of Enterprise 2.0, however, do require both behavioural and technological changes and are therefore long-haul products. Do you update your status on Facebook several times a day? Maybe you daily ask questions of one of your specialized LinkedIn groups? You can replicate this experience inside your organization. Just a few years ago, Smith says, “when we wanted to revise a classroom training program, we would write a survey, send this to all business unit HR leaders around the world, analyze the results and then use this input to design a new pilot.” But today, Smith and his team start a conversation on Yammer and use tags to create a dialogue with employees. Instead of starting with a survey to gather input, Smith and team start a conversation stream on Yammer and tag it with #english and #expat. At Meredith Corporation, the publisher of Ladies Home Journal and Better Homes & Gardens, microblogging tool Socialtext Signals is the platform of choice. Provide training to employees.
