The 16th century French writer Michel de Montaigne is famous for penning a large collection of essays (or “attempts”). Those who strive to account for a man’s deeds are never more bewildered than when they try to knit them into one whole and to show them under one light, since they commonly contradict each other in so odd a fashion that it seems impossible that they should all come out of the same shop… They select one universal character, then, following that model, they classify and interpret all the actions of a great man; if they cannot twist them the way they want they accuse the man of insincerity. A few pieces of contemporary research confirm Montaigne’s observation. A possible reason for this is a psychological phenomenon called “processing fluency.”

My junior year in high school, I was caught with a loaded, stolen handgun on school property at my school in East Tennessee. Yet, while we never found the lost city of Atlantis, an international group of scientists has found evidence of an ancient micro-continent resting beneath two islands in the Indian Ocean. Until around 750 million years ago, all of the dry land on Earth was collected into a single continent called Rodinia, the older supercontinent counterpart to the more well-known Pangaea. New evidence suggests at least one landmass got lost in this continental ballet that occurred millions of years before the emergence of man. The team of British, Norwegian, South African and German scientists made this discovery while studying grains of sand from the beaches of Mauritius, a tiny yet popular tropical island in the Indian Ocean. “But once upon a time, it was sitting north of Madagascar,” Torsvik noted.
