CSS and semantic thinking changed that, and today CSS frameworks make designing relatively easy. But they can also generate a surprising number of superfluous elements. The 960 Grid System encourages the addition of <div> elements and class attributes, especially on complicated pages. Is this really an improvement over nested tables? Creating cleaner code means going beyond the framework and thinking about what it really represents. CSS frameworks provide a workflow solution, namely a rapid deployment of grid-based web layouts. Before CSS saw widespread use, tables provided all the layout a web designer needed. As designers learned to use CSS, div elements replaced tables. The Spread of Class-itis and Div-itis Clear, lean code offers many advantages. Other than the semantics, the great advantage of using <div>…</div> over <table><tr><td>…</td></tr></table> is that we end up with less code to do the same job. Solutions

Mastering the 960 Grid System We're already familiar with the 12- and 16-column variants of 960.gs, but did you know that a 24-column alternative exists too? In this article, you'll master the 960 grid system by dissecting the 24-column version demo. If you've only used 960gs before for Photoshop mockups, consider this your lucky day. By the end of this article, you'll be able to convert your designs to HTML and CSS in no time at all. A 960 Grid System Master—that's what you'll be after you've gone through this article. And, although we're going to use the 24-column variant of 960gs, you'll completely understand how the two older types (i.e., 12- and 16-columns) work too, by applying the same principles you'll learn here. We first need to check the HTML code of the demo, so view its source—if you're using Chrome, Firefox, or Opera, just press ctrl+U; if you're using Internet Explorer, change your browser! That's pretty much all we need to prepare, aside from a semi-functioning brain. As you can see, Good questions.

Mockups Take a second. Let it sink in. The first impression might be disorienting. There are very few interface elements on the screen. Start exploring however, and you'll find out that Mockups is filled with powerful yet only-visible-when-you-need-them features. Getting your ideas out should be effortless. We've been in business long enough that we think we have learned enough about ourselves, our product, our customers and our competitive space to be able to put a stake in the ground and tell the world what we're about. Our sweet spot: the ideation phase Mockups really shines during the early stages of designing a new interface. Mockups is zenware, meaning that it will help you get "in the zone", and stay there. Mockups offers the same speed and rough feel as sketching with pencil, with the advantage of the digital medium: drag & drop to resize and rearrange elements, make changes without starting over, and your work is clear enough that you'll make sense of them later. 10 Completely Free Wireframing and Mockup Tools The wireframing process is the straight-to-the-point and completely non-tech stage of any web project. It only requires that you define a skeletal outline of essential page elements such as headers, footers, navigation and content area and should illustrate how to cater and respond to any possible interaction from a user.It is the most important, yet underused, stage of any web or apps development. Please note that this post is quite old, so some of these apps may not longer be free. There are several avenues you could take for sketching a wireframe, most notably pen and paper (the easiest and most cost effective way), but for the sake of this article we have focused on apps that are not only highly effective and easy to use, they are also completely free. We have covered free wireframe apps before (here), but a year is a long time in web development – some of the apps we had previously covered are either no longer completely free or are no longer available. iPhone Mockup fluidIA

Less Framework 2 I called Less Framework "a CSS grid system for designing adaptive websites". It was basically a fixed-width grid that adapted to a couple of then popular screen widths by shedding some of its columns. It also had matching typographic presets to go with it, built with a modular scale based on the golden ratio. The resources it was originally published with are still available on GitHub. Contrary to how most CSS frameworks work, Less Framework simply provided a set of code comments and visual templates, instead of having predefined classes to control the layout with. /* Default Layout: 992px. Less Framework was popular in the early days of responsive design. Eventually, I moved on from fixed-width grid systems and worked on a fully fluid-width one, in the form of Golden Grid System. Less Framework's popularity was helped by the following contributions and the lovely people behind them (dead links crossed off):
