Design Trends (Predictions) in 2010 As we are stepping in a new decade, I can foresee that web design in 2010 is going to be fun and filled with experimental works. With the new CSS3 and HTML5, designers and developers are trying to utilize the new features to create impressive designs. Sketchy and large background styles are fading out. Serif fonts and texturized background will be popular. Thanks to CSS3, we are going to see a lot of rounded corners, RGBA transparency, and drop shadows. Serif Fonts In the last decade, most web sites were designed in either Verdana or Arial (sans-serif fonts), but that is going to change in this new decade. Big Headings Big headings in header (as part of design interface) will gain more popularity in 2010. Custom Font Embedding As Typekit is expanding their font list and more free quality fonts are available (e.g. Texturized Background The big background trend is going to be gradually out-of-date and be replaced with subtle and texturized (particularly the light noise) background. Seasons of the Witch Complex Repeating Patterns Part I Introduction Though there are multiple ways to get to the same result, for me the following method is the most accurate, detailed and versatile, and unlike other methods it allows unlimited future reworking of the pattern if needed… it’s also requires the most work, so be prepared. Designing Without Gradients | Build Internet! The gradient has become a universal crutch. Hypocrisy, we know, considering parts of this blog’s current design. Gradients have a habit of decorating since the design trends introduced by Web 2.0 gloss. The starburst badges and text reflections may have faded into obscurity, but the brash gradient stuck it out. Please don’t read this as a “you’re doing it wrong” post, because there have been far too many of those in the design community lately. Consider this a demonstration of alternatives with a low risk invitation to try it out. You don’t need to quit gradients completely.
