LearnersTV The Museum of Islamic Art It isn’t often that a building stuns – literally. However, this is the case with the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Traditional Islamic architecture meets the twenty first century to spectacular effect. Nothing is done by halves here. Even the palm lines entrance (and entrancing is perhaps the right word) fills the visitor with expectation. Sublimely designed by IM Pei, the museum opened its doors to the public less than two years ago. The building is, as you might expect, heavily influenced by ancient Islamic architecture but its design is unique and there is simply no other building like it on earth. Sabhia al Khemir became the founding director of the museum in 2006. Image Credit Flickr User websterkate The idea that contemporary Islamic culture is inward looking was contradicted from the word go by the invitation to IM Pei to be the chief architect of the project. But what lies within? The foyer itself is a grandiose mix of marble, steel and glass.

How Can Web 2.0 Curation Tools Be Used in the Classroom? "Curation" may be one of the big buzzwords of 2011. As the amount of information accumulates thanks to the Web, it becomes increasingly important that we use tools to help us find information that's relevant and useful. The role of the curator has always been to help pull together and oversee collections of materials. But just as Web 2.0 has expanded the traditional role of publisher to almost anyone, the role of curator now too is changing. Anyone can "curate" online material, pulling together their own collections. There are a number of tools that enable this. That's another vital part of the act of curation: what other people have deemed important. While the Web has perhaps democratized who can be an expert, we do still prefer to turn to those with specific backgrounds and from specific professions, especially when it comes to education. One interesting new curation tool is Scoop.it.

Wikiversity Free Science Videos and Lectures The Best Game Design Schools In North America yes we do actually. the average american college graduate has about $25,000 in student loans, although for many students, particularly depending on the school, it can be much more. I did WPI (not CS though) 15ish years ago and even then I thought everything was unnecessarily expensive. I'm beginning to think its some sort of artificial gauntlet they make you run to be part of "the club". There are low interest loan programs in the US you can take advantage of along with some scholarship opportunities. I'm currently in my final year of RIT in the Game Design program and I'm not going to lie; it is expensive. I suggest starting out by contacting the people down in the financial aid office, if the cost is your biggest concern. I'm currently attending Shawnee State University and it costs me a little under $5,000 a semester, and I'm out of state.

Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? PART ONE: WHATS A FAIR START? Is it just to tax the rich to help the poor? John Rawls says we should answer this question by asking what principles you would choose to govern the distribution of income and wealth if you did not know who you were, whether you grew up in privilege or in poverty. Wouldnt you want an equal distribution of wealth, or one that maximally benefits whomever happens to be the least advantaged? After all, that might be you. Professor Sandel recaps how income, wealth, and opportunities in life should be distributed, according to the three different theories raised so far in class. PART ONE: WHATS A FAIR START?

A Year in Reading 2012 By C. Max Magee posted at 6:00 am on December 3, 2012 20 The end of another year is here (so soon? Ah, I’m getting old), and with it a flood of valedictory lists and wrap ups, accountings and scorecards. Each year, as these lists spill out across the landscape, the onslaught becomes difficult to parse and begins to feel suspiciously (to us, anyway) like a marketing boondoggle to support the promotional-book-cover-sticker-and-blurb industry. There are so many “best of the year” lists that everything is the best (and sometimes also the worst). So, how can we have some year-end fun while still extracting something meaningful from the effort? We readers tend to be a thoughtful bunch, noting down the titles we have read or lining them up one by one on a shelf. And so in preparing our annual Year in Reading series, we’ve asked our esteemed guests to take us on a tour of these pinnacles and to give an accounting of these treks.
