What Is Curriculum-Based Measurement And What Does It Mean to My Child? by Kathleen McLane Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) is a method teachers use to find out how students are progressing in basic academic areas such as math, reading, writing, and spelling. CBM can be helpful to parents because it provides current, week-by-week information on the progress their children are making. When your child’s teacher uses CBM, he or she finds out how well your child is progressing in learning the content for the academic year. How Does CBM Work? When CBM is used, each child is tested briefly each week. After the scores are entered on the graphs, the teacher decides whether to continue instruction in the same way, or to change it. The teacher can change instruction in any of several ways. Other Ways CBM Can Help You CBM can also help you work more effectively with the school system on your child’s behalf. 4Teachers : Main Page Council for Learning Disabilities Delaware County Intermediate Unit {*style:Building a Healthier Lifestyle? Put the Big Rocks In First! *} This is an old story and you may have heard it before. A speaker pulled out a wide mouth gallon jar, and placed it next to a pile of fist-sized rocks. The group replied, “Yes.” He then got some gravel from under the table and added it to the jar. This time the group replied, “Probably not.” The speaker then added some sand and asked,“Is the jar full?” “No!” Finally, the speaker filled the jar with water and asked the group the point of the illustration. Someone replied that you could always fit more things in your life if “you really work at it.” “No,” countered the speaker. Hopefully you are embarking on the journey of developing healthier habits this year. Say “Yes” to your big rocks first. Thank you for taking this journey with us. The Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU) is a regional education services agency.
