20 design landmarks everyone should see before they die When looking for design inspiration, it’s common to look at other people’s websites, illustrations, or photography. But sometimes it’s good to mix things up a bit. Have you ever been hit with a bolt of creative inspiration just by walking down the street? Next time you’re out in town, look up, take a big step back (watching out for traffic of course) and look at the bigger picture. We’re talking architecture - design that’s all around us every day, and most of the time we don’t even notice it. In this article we pay tribute to 25 of the most beautiful, unique, weird and wonderful design-related landmarks around the world.

A Cathedral Made from 55,000 LED Lights The Luminarie De Cagna is an imposing cathedral-like structure that was recently on display at the 2012 Light Festival in Ghent, Belgium. The festival was host to almost 30 exhibitions including plenty of 3D projection mapping, fields of luminous flowers, and a glowing phone booth aquarium, however with 55,000 LEDs and towering 28 meters high the Luminarie De Cagna seems to have stolen the show. Architecture Over the past seven years, at our creative agency, Access, we have worked with a number of residential and commercial property developers from Abu Dhabi to Sydney, helping them with development and strategy. Yet we see so often the sad sight of yet another mediocre building going up. We see city councils approving mediocre design and we see cities looking uglier because of it. We see property developers rushing to get their building up, wanting to make a quick sale and profit, and not really caring or thinking about the aesthetics of the building. The Illuminated Sleeper I have always believed that sleep is one of our more interesting endeavours. So when I experienced a period of insomnia a few years back, sleep’s sudden absence becamea kind of overarching obsession. And in my ensuing efforts to understand sleep’s retreat and hasten it’s restoration I also found a direction of interest and imagery for my work. While my art practice has always been primarily rooted in a representational approach to drawing - what I’m striving to represent is the interior world - some fleeting glimpse of less visible aspects of the self - a hunt for a hint of the unconscious. So I draw - and in that process seek to be surprised by what might show up among the marks.
