.: Itzik Ben-Shalom :. Grounds for Sculpture As a young man, Itzik Benshalom established a foundry and specialized in the lost wax technique of metal casting. After fifteen years he started creating his own works. Benshalom's passion for life is reflected in the subject matter he realizes in his bronze sculptures. He often pairs figures--one male and one female--to portray relationships and human interaction. Benshalom's sculptures are in private and corporate collections in Israel, Japan and England, as well as many in the United States. One man, 100,000 toothpicks, and 35 years: An incredible kinetic sculpture of San Francisco Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay, that he continues to modify and expand even today. The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. He admits in the video that there are several toothpick sculptures even larger than his, but none has the unique kinetic components he’s constructed. Via his website Weaver estimates he’s spent over 3,000 hours on the project, and the toothpicks have been sourced from around the world: I have used different brands of toothpicks depending on what I am building. See the sculpture for yourself at the Tinkering Studio through the end of June.

Electrifying giants in your backyard | Crave While these giants could creep you out while driving solo across the bleak countryside, anything that beautifies the landscape gets my vote. Here, Brookline, Mass., architecture firm Choi+Shine struts its stuff, literally, by taking ubiquitous electrical pylon and creating transmission towers that resemble a sculpture park of electrifying statues with heads, torsos, forearms, and legs. While the Land of Giants project was originally submitted to a Icelandic contest aimed at obtaining new ideas and looks for high-voltage towers and lines, it could easily cross borders. Vanishing Sliced Steel Sculpture Using science and art, Julian Voss-Andreae creates incredible sculptures that can vanish right in front of our very eyes. Made up of a series of layered steel sheets, the sculpture forms a human image at a certain angle but then disappears at others. He calls this particular 8-foot high work of art Quantum Man. "When approached from the front or back, the sculpture seems to consist of solid steel, but when seen from the side it visually disappears almost completely," he says. "This fascinating effect offers a range of possible interpretations. In the context of quantum physics–inspired art it is natural to see Quantum Man as a metaphor for the wave-particle duality, the phenomenon that all matter exhibits wave-like or particle-like properties depending on the experimental question we ask." "Reality is not something out there, independent of us, and ultimately can't be separated from its observer." Julian Voss-Andreae's website

25 Striking Framed Papercuts by Peter Callesen Peter Callesen Peter Callesen thrives on creating art from paper, rather on it. Using paper only as a source, he creates beautiful sculptural works. Each work is made by cutting out one sheet of paper, and using the removed scraps to create figures, buildings, and other objects. His work ranges from 2D to 3D. These sheets range from small a4 size or as big as 7m by 5m. Peter Callesen was born in Denmark, 1967.
