Open ebook: Modern World History As a faculty member who has experienced teaching Modern World History in four separate states, I can confidently state that Modern World History easily meets and fits the topical outline or framework required by any topical outline, GT requirement, or state requirement that I’ve come across. Beyond satisfying institutional mandates, this text is also broad in scope, and effectively covers key historical events (Imperialism, WWI, WWII, Cold War) and themes (decolonization, modern crises, neo-liberalism) expected from such a work. In addition, while the text provides helpful appendices there is no index or glossary to be found. Similarly, the table of contents would also benefit by listing sub-sections of the text instead of just the pagination and title of its chapters. Altogether, the content accuracy of the text is remarkably impressive. Modern World History mostly accomplishes the herculean tasks of navigating the complexity of modern global events in an accessible and engaging way.
Applied Network Science | Springer Open Environmental Sciences Europe | Springer Open Open ebook: History of International Relations The book is comprehensive in the extent that it does cover multiple regions across the world. It does have some glaring omissions, not the least are the matter of how these regional systems operated and how they were interpreted locally across time. A further curious omission is the impact of trade relations between regions, whether it was simply the exchange of foreign goods or ritualized tribute. The book gives a nice summary of various cultures and regions though it doesn't go into much detail. Overall, the textbook gives a nice overview of the history of state formation and political philosophies that developed independently of "the West" prior to the rise of European expansionism. The text is written in a straightforward manner that is appropriate for an intro-level course. The book is consistent in terminology (as well as what it leaves out). The organization of the text makes it easy to set up a course with different theme- and region-based sections across a semester.
Brain Informatics | Springer Open Environmental Systems Research | Springer Open Open ebook: World History: Cultures, States, and Societies to 1500 Most of the chapters are dense with information and do not skip over important events, individuals, or phenomena. There are some peculiar lacunae, however. For example, there are a few offhand references to the Bronze Age, but no detailed discussion of it or the Iron Age. There are places in which phrasing implies something that isn’t quite true - for instance, Mesopotamian empires did not directly transition from the Akkadian Empire of Sargon the Great to the Babylonian Empire of Hammurabi centuries later (to name a single intervening empire, there was the “Ur III” dynasty). The topics are relevant and well-chosen. One issue with the book’s clarity is its density, as noted above. The authorial approach is consistent throughout, with each chapter including a background discussion, issues with sources, geography, a chronological narrative, and then a summary to wrap up. The book is very well-structured, with clear headings, subheadings, and sections. This is an excellent book.
