Basic Wine Knowledge All types of red wine are made by growing and processing red (or black) grapes. The wine that is the end result will vary greatly, depending not only upon the type of grape grown, but several other factors. These factors include in which country and region the grapes are grown, how the climate, temperature, rain amount, and soil conditions affect the grapes during their growing season, and how each individual wine maker treats the grapes once they are harvested (picked). Pinot Noir grapes growing in Bourgognes, France This is the true appeal of wine and wine making. The best types of red wine are those in which all these factors come together perfectly to make a beautifully balanced, delicious wine. Today, red wine grapes, like white wine grapes, are grown all over the world. In the United States, types of red wine are primarily grown in California, and along the west coast. Know your Whiskey: The Difference between Bourbon and Scotch I can’t tell you how many times someone has asked me “What’s the difference between Scotch and Whiskey”? At first I thought it was just one person who misunderstood the concept, but after running into this situation multiple times over the last few years I’ve learned that the majority of the people in the world really have no idea what makes whiskey whiskey, Scotch Scotch and Bourbon Bourbon. What is Whiskey? If we’re going to explain the difference between whiskeys, first you should understand what a whiskey actually is. All whiskey must be distilled at a minimum of 40% and a maximum of 94.8% alcohol by volume, . What is Scotch? Since all whiskey is made from fermented grain mash, Scotch will obviously be no exception. The spirit must also be aged in oak casks for no less than three years, and must have an ABV at less than 94.8%. What is Bourbon? Bourbon whiskey must be made from a grain mixture which is at least 51% corn. What is Tennessee Whiskey? What is Rye? What is Irish Whiskey?
