RNA splicing removes the introns from pre mRNA to produce the final set of instructions for the protein. Synthesis of DNA There is a major difference between DNA polymerase and RNA polymerase: the RNA polymerase can synthesize a new strand whereas the DNA polymerase can only extend an existing strand. Therefore, to synthesize a DNA molecule, a short RNA molecule (~ 5 - 12 nucleotides) must be synthesize first by a special enzyme. The initiating RNA molecule is known as a primer, and the enzyme is called primase. In addition to DNA polymerase and primase, DNA replication requires helicase and single strand binding protein (SSB protein). The role of helicase is to unwind the duplex DNA. SSB proteins can bind to both separated strands, preventing them from annealing (reconstitution of double-stranded DNA from single strands). The replication mechanisms in both bacteria and eukaryotes are similar. Figure 7-B-2. DNA polymerases can extend nucleic acid strands only in the 5' to 3' direction. Figure 7-B-3. English Phrasal Verbs What is a Phrasal Verb? Phrasal verbs (also called multi-word verbs) are idiomatic expressions, combining verbs and prepositions to make new verbs whose meaning is often not obvious from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. They are widely used in both written and spoken English, and new ones are formed all the time as they are a flexible way of creating new terms. A phrasal verb consists of a verb and a preposition or adverb that modifies or changes the meaning; 'give up' is a phrasal verb that means 'stop doing' something, which is very different from 'give'. Phrasal verbs can be divided into groups: Intransitive verbs These don't take an object Example: They had an argument, but they've made up now. Inseparable verbs The object must come after the particle. Example: They are looking after their grandchildren. Separable verbs With some separable verbs, the object must come between the verb and the particle: The quality of their work sets them apart from their rivals.
