Newzald: From Moleskine to Market | i love typography, the typography blog By Kris Sowersby In this article I will attempt to illustrate my design process—from typeface concept to a marketable font. Not many folks are willing to write about this. Perhaps they find it boring, irrelevant or just a little bit personal. I suspect it is a mix of all the above. I’ll try to remain as concise as possible. 1) Purpose. The first thing to decide is the purpose of the typeface. 2) The first sketches Bearing these things in mind I made some rough sketches. 3) Firing up FontLab Fontlab is the only application that I use for drawing and spacing letterforms. 4) Looking at the lasers Print tests are done at all stages in production. 5) Adding a bit more When I’m happy with how the lowercase is looking, I’ll add a few capitals. 6) Balancing the white It took me a while to understand that a typeface is the harmony of black & white. Thirty spokes unite at the single hub; It is the empty space which makes the wheel useful. 7) Fleshing out the character set 8) The extended family

The 6-minute video, titled “Productivity Future Vision (2011),” is a sequel to a similarly themed video from 2009 with the same title. Each video shows hows technology adds value and real-time information to help us communicate, pursue projects and do business. Not only are the videos insightful but they’re just plain cool. The new video includes several ideas we’ve seen recently, such as small touch-screen phones that relay incredible amount of information two ways, a Siri-like helper that’s activated by voice and touch screens on things like refrigerators and office-focused displays. Many different concepts are on display as the video shifts from person to person, and the scenes connect in one world-spanning story. Watch the amazing full video below:

V.O.W N°26 // Melvin the Machine | Yatzer™ photo © HEYHEYHEY V.O.W N°26 (27 June - 3 July 2011) We think of innovation and invention as highly engineered, complex systems that are built by some mad scientist in a remote space. The process results in long and layered equations, drawings and an endless source of references illustrated in a step by step process to further explain the construction of the device or machine. We have familiarized ourselves with this elaborate system through Einstein, Sherlock Holmes, even the coyote as he tries to invent ways to capture the road runner. Melvin the Magical Mixed Media Machine is best described as a Rube Goldberg machine with a twist. Created by studio HEYHEYHEY for the 2010 Dutch Design Week, Melvin was featured for 10 days at the MU artspace where 14,000 people came to see it perform. sources: Melvin the Machine
Digital Urban We All Love Typography | inspiredology.com Typography is an art and skill which is enjoying a renaissance in interest within the design community. Along with use of space and use of colour, typography is one of the most important facets of good design, and the expert use of tools to manipulate typographical elements cannot be emphasized enough. In this in-depth post, we will be going through some of the tools, at both beginner and advanced levels, available to use when working with type within that unappreciated program, Adobe InDesign. The Character Palette At first glance, the Character palette is pretty straightforward. The hidden side of the Character palette can be discovered through the drop-down context menu. The Paragraph Palette The Paragraph palette, meanwhile, allows for over-arching control suited to creating the shape of the paragraph itself. Where the fun begins, much like with the Character Palette, is with the drop-down context menu. The Glyph Palette Hyphenation Justification That’s a Wrap

Hand-Drawing Style In Modern Web Design | Design Showcase The most valuable and innovative ideas had all been first. That’s no big news, since designers tend to produce first sketches as paper prototypes anyway; still it’s important, because web design is different from “usual” design. Of course, it also has a personal note and it is hand-made, however users can’t see that. As CSS is “boxy but good”, designs tend to have a rather limited appearance — they are too boxy and too right-angled. If designers want to achieve a different design, they have to draw their sites by themselves — or at least some parts of it. Sometimes designers create whole pages with paper, pencil and/or a tablet PC. How impressive can the results be? 1. Since hand-drawing is a typical feature of graphic artists, designers and illustrators and is often associated with creativity and inspiration, it is often used in and showcases. The interesting thing is that the hand-drawn style is often which is used by designers to present their work on their site. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 6.
