Technology Timesavers for Teachers - myTeachersLounge Teachers today are fortunate to have access to technological tools that make our jobs easier and minimize the paperwork involved in educating our students. I didn’t grow up with computers like today’s students did, but I’m very much on board with becoming more tech savvy and, yes, even accepting help from my students when I have technical difficulties. About a year ago I bought myself an iPad after saving for it for months. It was going to help me organize my life, both at home and at school, and guess what? It did. I love my iPad and I can’t see myself living without it. The first tool I use is DropBox and you don’t have to have an iPad to use it. DropBox is a way to store your documents “in the cloud” so that you have access to them wherever you are. I cannot tell you how liberating it was for me to kick my jump drive to the curb. I also don’t have the problem of having some files on my computer at home and some on my computer at school. Imagine! One app I use is Teacher Assistant.

Wherever I facilitate workshops, I find there are some myths floating around about Apple's iOS devices, and I'd like to clear up some of the misinformation. iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch do not have user manuals. Gone are the days when you receive a thick printed user manual with your electronics purchase. Instead of an in-depth guide, Apple includes a glossy folded-up single sheet of paper called Finger Tips in the box. iPad User Guide: PDF or iBooksiPhone User Guide: PDF or iBooksiPod touch User Guide: PDF or iBooks You have to have a credit card associated with your iTunes account. A credit card is not required when you create an iTunes account. First log out of any iTunes accounts you might be signed into. The McClanahan 7: Times Tables the Fun Way As a member of TOS Crew this year we have tried some excellent curriculum and we have had some fun things too. Times Alive from City Creek Press falls into both categories. Times Alive makes learning the 0-9 multiplications tables fun. I used this program with my 8 & 9 year old daughters, but my 6 year old loved the videos and some of the activities. The first thing to do in Times Alive is to take a pre-test with 48 multiplication problems, this test records the number answered correctly, a percentage score, and the time it takes to complete the test. The fun part comes after the pre-test. This is the 4X4 story. The stories that are used for each fact are very easy to remember. Activity for 3X3. The kids like Times Alive for the fun videos and the catchy songs, I like it because they are actually remembering their multiplication facts, I just wish we would have had it years ago when my older children were learning theirs.
10 extremely awesome iPad tips and tricks | 11 of 11 As you're most likely aware of, there are some default apps on the iPad that are there to stay. They can't be deleted, but they can all be moved into a group... that is, all but one: Newsstand. Yes, this annoying app (to me, at least) is never used by many iPad users, yet Apple's made it such that you cannot delete it or even put it in a group. Fortunately, there's a bit of a workaround for placing it in a group, though doing as such will make Newsstand lose functionality until removing it from the group (which doesn't matter, because you want it gone in the first place). Here's what you do: From your home screen, long-press an app to get the apps to jiggle. Since I don't ever use any of the default apps (outside of the App Store, iTunes, and Game Center), I have an app group titled "Default Apps." Need gadgets or gift ideas?

What I Wish I’d Done Before Deploying iPads to 735 Middle Schoolers, Part 2 | Terice T. Schneider's Digital Home We planned. We met to go over the plans. We talked. What we didn’t do was address some of the simple day-to-day things that we never thought would be an issue. When offering professional development to teachers on integrating iPads, give them training on a management system like Texas’s Project Share from Epsilen (which is releasing an App soon), Edmodo, or Schoology or even eBackPack. Teachers also want to know how to deliver content to their students. Everyone agreed that the better way to do this would have been to choose one, train how to use it and stick with it for a year. Finally, give your teachers clear expectations, not only of the iPad use in the classroom, but of how classroom management should look. We had an expectation that the iPads would be used multiple times a week if not daily. Some tips we used for classroom management are: “Apples UP!” I hope these tips will help those of you deploying iPads next year.
