What is Conceptual Photography? (part 1) Magnum Photos Magnum Photos is an international photographic cooperative owned by its photographer-members, with offices located in New York, Paris, London and Tokyo. According to co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson, "Magnum is a community of thought, a shared human quality, a curiosity about what is going on in the world, a respect for what is going on and a desire to transcribe it visually."[1] Founding of agency[edit] Robert Capa, David "Chim" Seymour, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and William Vandivert (all five of them photographers), Rita Vandivert and Maria Eisner were the founding members of Magnum in Paris in 1947, based on an idea of Capa's. Magnum is one of the first photographic cooperatives, owned and administered entirely by members. The Magnum cooperative has included photojournalists from across the world, who have covered many historical events of the 20th century. Elections of new members[edit] No member photographer of Magnum has ever been asked to leave. Member list[edit]

Hiroji Kubota Hiroji Kubota (久保田 博二, Kubota Hiroji?, born 1939) is a renowned Japanese photographer, a member of Magnum Photos who has specialized in photographing the far east. Born in Kanda (Tokyo) on 2 August 1939, Kubota studied politics at Waseda University, graduating in 1962.[1] In 1961 he met the Magnum photographers René Burri, Elliott Erwitt, and Burt Glinn.[2] He then studied journalism and international politics at the University of Chicago, and became an assistant to Erwitt and Cornell Capa, in 1965, a freelance photographer.[1] Kubota photographed the 1968 US presidential election and then Ryūkyū islands before their return to Japan in 1972. He then photographed Saigon in 1975, North Korea in 1978, and China in 1979–85, and the USA in 1988–92, resulting in books and exhibitions.[1] Exhibitions by Kubota[edit] "The President's People."
