Teaching Large Classes with an iPad » To this day I remain a big fan of the overhead projector. I truly believe it was more effective a tool for teaching than the projected Powerpoint slides will ever be. I stood facing the students, watching their expressions, which I could see since the lights were sufficiently bright. I could draw on the screen and change directions as questions arose. It’s been downhill ever since, …until this semester. This semester I’ve purchased an iPad2 and a software application called SplashTop Remote Desktop. To reach this new level of teaching nirvana I have found at least two routes (so far): The first requires that I simply bring my laptop (as I always did anyway) to class along with whatever cables/dongles needed to connect the laptop to the projection system, and my iPad.The second does not require the laptop but does require an AppleTV + whatever it takes to connect that to the projector. In both cases you could use the resulting system to present with KeyNote® but that would be so 90′s.
How to Design a Beautiful iPad Lesson: This is a beautiful lesson designed and presented by Rob Miller on Scrib. What I really like about this series of activities is that it allows the students or in Rob's case his teachers to articulate their own learning. It is never about a single app. It is the combination of apps that allow the learners to meet the learning outcomes. It is a great example of building a meaningful lesson around a concept and then providing the students with the tools to create content. The other great thing about this lesson is the beautifully designed yet simple instructions built by Rob. I would like to thank Rob for sharing this resource. This series of activities has got me thinking about a whole range of tasks that I now want to design and share with my own students.

Every day we start with about 30 minutes of iPad training — which is really the nuts and bolts of the Boot Camp. We felt is was important that the students know how to use their iPads like a pro. Here is a breakdown of what we cover everyday… Monday: - set up and get on our wireless - app check (all needed apps) - set up Gmail account - set up PogoPlug account - set up Cinch account - set up 360 Panorama account - make new note called Timmy S. - take photos (metering) - photo booth self photo - downloading photos from websites - email photos to me Tuesday: - create folders - access all running apps - orientation lock or mute - quick volume mute - airplay - looking at PDFs - iBooks (download samples from PogoPlug) - Safari (zooming, quick to top, bookmarks) Wednesday: - take an screenshot - turning off your iPad (really turn it off) - avoiding underpowered USB docks - use multitasking gestures - printing with your iPad - set up Toontastic Toontube account
