The iPad 2 and Apple TV … Ed Tech Industry Killer?
What would you rather get for your classroom, an iPad 2 and Apple TV or an Interactive Whiteboard? Are your teachers asking for Interactive Whiteboards? Hold on to that discussion and don’t answer until you know all of the possibilities! I think we now have the ability to put together a very highly effective digital classroom with the combination of iPad 2′s, a digital projector, and an Apple TV. Maybe we can get rid of the need for document cameras, scanners, clicker hubs, and still or digital video cameras as well? Perhaps you don’t know about the new possibilities of this fantastic little black box called Apple TV. There is More to iPads in the Classroom Than Apps
In a previous post, Evaluating Apps with Transformative Use of the iPad in Mind, I describe my ambivalence about teacher asking my for the “perfect” app to teach this or that. I have teachers ask me frequently about app recommendations for different subject areas.“What app could I use to teach subtraction?”“What app would you recommend for my students to practice writing?” In a recent article, titled ” How the iPad Can Transform Classrooms” by Ben Johnson on Edutopia, raises awareness of the difference between using the iPad as a way to teach students versus the iPad as a tool to learn for students. As I mentioned in my previous post, I intend to use my iPad to do as much of my work as possible and that includes setting up and producing this blog. I am using Blogspot for the blog as (a) its free and (b) I use Google Docs a lot so it made sense to stick with a Google service so I needed to find an app that would work with Blogspot. Step forward Blogpress, £1.79 from the app store, 2 minutes to set up and we're off! Having set up a Blogspot account, chosen my blog name and layout (all done on the iPad), it was now time to make a graphic for my header. Firstly, I searched the Internet for the images I wanted to use in my header, these where saved to my Photos folder. Next, I used Photopad to crop the header to the size I wanted and again it was saved to photos. Now I cheated and used my Mac to access the header graphic from Dropbox and upload it to Blogspot to set as my header. This particular post was created entirely on an iPad including the graphic showing the apps I used.

A $100 Solar-Powered Tablet: Will This Be “The One”?
Digital Tools At the flashy Las Vegas gathering this week, the Consumer Electronics Show, there will likely be a lot of tablets unveiled, but none are as eagerly anticipated as the OLPC XO 3.0, a tablet version of the famously inexpensive and rugged laptop from One Laptop Per Child founder Nicholas Negroponte. The tablet release comes after bruising criticism of the highly anticipated laptop several years ago, which some in the industry called a failure. The new tablet, designed to be an educational device for students in the developing world, where electricity and broadband access is scarce, addresses this to some extent. “If they can really pull off the $100 price point, it will be the most well-built tablet under $200.” There’s great interest and excitement in the development of low-cost tablets, for lots of reasons. Though it’s thicker than most tablets on the market, it doesn’t skimp on its other hardware specifications: it has a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, and 4 GM of storage.
What Do You Mean Evernote Could Get Better?
Last time I wrote about the way I organize myself completely changed for the better with Evernote. Really, I can't talk enough about this program and the endless possibilities there are for it. (Just look at the comments from that post.) In that post I gave a few resources for learning about Evernote and even fewer with how to use it in the classroom. Well, lots of people have sent me lots of great resources and I wanted to follow-up and post some more. These are sites, lists and ideas all for using Evernote for your personal use or in the classroom. iPad Classroom Next Term? – 10 Things to Consider
If the iPad is making a ‘move’ on your classroom this year then these ten points are worth considering: Check your wireless network for everything from capacity to ‘dead-zones’. Leave no stone unturned as a failing wireless network will severely hamper iPad use in school.Be hands on with apps/methods you might ask students to use and see what it is like to produce ‘work’. After a year of iPad use, it is clear to me that it can be a very effective tool for learning. Please add any other pointers in the comments section.
