Since I’ve started using social media the question I get asked the most is “What filters are you using?”, or more specifically “What kind of Neutral Density Filters are you using?”. So here is some information you could find useful. Graduated Neutral Density (GND) filters are resin filters of square or rectangle shapes, which have a dark neutral density half, decreasing light transmission, and a clear half. The filters require a filter holder, which will be attached to the front of your lens with an adaptor ring. GNDs are traditionally used to control the light in scenes with a bright area (the sky), on which you apply the neutral density section of the filter, and a dark area (foreground, rocks, mountains, etc.) on which you apply the clear section of the filter. What to choose? From my experience Lee and Singh Ray are probably the two best brands to buy from. Attached image Like this post? References
50 years of the Rolling Stones in 50 photographs They have rocked the world for 50 years and the Mirror’s photographers have captured all the ups and downs On Thursday July 12, 1962 six young lads took to the stage of the Marquee Club and a legend was born. They have rocked the world for 50 years and the Mirror’s photographers have captured all the ups and downs. So when the Rolling Stones decided to release a book to mark the milestone, they knew where to come to find the best images. The Rolling Stones: 50 is crammed with amazing snaps hand-picked by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood, many from our extensive archive. “This is our story of 50 fantastic years,” the rock ’n’ rollers said of the official book yesterday. “We started out as a blues band playing the clubs and more recently we’ve filled the largest stadiums in the world with the kind of show that none of us could have imagined all those years ago. “Curated by us, it features the very best photographs and ephemera from and beyond our archives.” View gallery
Marc and Angel Hack Life - Practical Tips for Productive Living Russ Bishop Photography | Nature Photo Blog Thoreau’s famous words apply as much to successful landscape photography as life itself. Often when we first approach a classic scene we’re inclined to capture as much of it as possible in hopes that nothing is left out. Many times a wide angle view is the best perspective for those grand vistas, but it still must be carefully composed in order to guide the viewer’s eye through the frame. The problems arise when there is too much information and the image becomes cluttered and confusing. As with taking on too much in our lives and missing the forest for the trees, sometimes we need to simplify the scene to make it stronger.

Bret Edge Photography » Jim Goldstein’s New e-Book: Photographing the 4th Dimension – Time Photographer Jim Goldstein just released a new e-book, “ Photographing the 4th Dimension – Time “, that looks to be an outstanding guide to getting started with slow shutter and video techniques. I haven’t had a chance to read the book in its entirety but from what I’ve seen in skimming through it I’m thoroughly impressed with the quality and quantity of information presented. I’ll post a full review after I’ve spent more time with it. In a nutshell, “ Photographing the 4th Dimension – Time ” is written for photographers who are looking to expand their skillset to include light painting, star trails and time lapse photography. The book appears to be laid out well, nicely organized, full of valuable information and beautifully designed. At $20, “ Photographing the 4th Dimension – Time ” isn’t the cheapest e-book on the market but for those with an interest in learning slow shutter photography techniques, it’s well worth the small investment.

1000 Awesome Things | A time-ticking countdown of 1000 awesome things by Neil Pasricha Bret Edge Photography » 2011 – My Year in Photos Here we are in 2012. Already. It doesn’t seem like a year ago that we ushered in 2011 but calendars don’t lie. 2011 was an interesting year for me. I spent more time in the office building my business and less time in the field doing what we all love to do – photography. Every year I squeeze in a few big trips, consisting of a couple weeks each, to locations throughout the western United States. The images I’ve chosen to share as my favorites aren’t necessarily my best. Slot Canyon & River Rock, Nevada I found this slot canyon by chance while wandering around Valley of Fire State Park one morning following a sunrise shoot. Wildflowers and Storm Clouds in American Basin, Colorado American Basin may be over-photographed but it’s still one of my all-time favorite alpine locations. Storm Clouds Over Rock Point, Colorado Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park plays second fiddle to the nearby San Juan Mountains, which means you’re less likely to find yourself in a crowd.
25 Most Beautiful Animals Photography on StumbleUpon I think the most beautiful pictures are those made in nature. Nothing compares with the expression of a tiger, the majestic flight of an eagle or the strength of a white bear. Below you can see 25 the most beautiful animal photographs that will capture your attention, and were stumbled on StumbleUpon. The Astounding Design Of Eixample, Barcelona | All That Is Interesting - StumbleUpon Constructed in the early 20th century, Eixample is a district of the Spanish city of Barcelona known for the urban planning that divided the district into octagonal blocks. Influenced by a range of schools of architecture, Eixample Barcelona was designed in a grid pattern with long streets, wide avenues, and rounded street corners. Despite being in the center of a thriving European metropolis, the district provides improved living conditions for inhabitants including extensive sun light, improved ventilation, and more open green space for public use. And of course, the result from the grid-like structure is astounding from above:
Delicate Arch Under the Milky Way Galaxy | Free Roaming Photography Delicate Arch stands below the Milky Way Galaxy in Arches National Park, Utah. Note: This is a minimally processed photo. I’m on my laptop so the final version may or may not change in terms of processing once I’m back home. Since I had never really gotten the chance to explore Arches National Park on my own before this trip, I wanted to make the most of it, and that meant spending a few hours at the park’s most prominent feature, Delicate Arch. Despite it being photographed from virtually every angle and time of day, as well as not having any clouds in the sky that evening, I knew I wasn’t going to get anything groundbreakingly new, so I simply went up and enjoyed myself and took the best photos I knew how to do. My goal was to simply catch a nice sunset on Delicate Arch and then get the Milky Way Galaxy above it. Regardless, I was also happy with the Milky Way shot over Delicate Arch, and with some great company, it made navigating a new trail in complete darkness much more enjoyable.
The second collection of images from 2011 once again brought us nature at its full force with floods, drought, wild fires, tornadoes and spectacular images of volcanic eruptions. The death of Osama bin Laden, the attack on an island in Norway by a lone gunman, continued fighting in Libya, and protests around the globe were a few of the news events dominating the headlines. by avayaoli Jan 2
