Jodi Cobb photo.net interview Jodi Cobb specializes in large-scale, global stories exploring such topics as 21st-century slavery as well as more intimate stories set inside closed and secret worlds. A former staff photographer for National Geographic, she has worked in more than 50 countries, primarily in the Middle East and Asia. She is the author and photographer of the book Geisha: The Life, the Voices, the Art, which explores the previously hidden world of the Japanese geisha. I took a moment with Jodi to talk with her about her passion for photojournalistic photography. It was interesting to find out her insider’s perspective on the creation of a story from start to finish—how she proposes an idea, the research that goes into the stories, and the length of time for completion. As a strong follow-up to the interview, I attended Jodi Cobb’s An Evening with an Artist, organized by PIEA and sponsored by Nikon at PMA. It was extremely inspiring to speak with Jodi about her vision with photography. Jodi Cobb
ChinaHush Starting out with Large Format - Photo.net Large Format Forum A couple of thoughts: 1) It may not be the best idea to drop everything that you are familiar with for something brand new and quite different. You know how to use your current equipment, but there is a learning curve with large format and there is no guarantee that you will like it once you get the new gear, at which point all of your old gear will be gone. 2) A field camera cannot use a bag bellows, or at least not that I've ever seen. 3) 70mm and 250mm leaves a big gap in focal lengths. 4) 5 film holders = 10 shots, which depending on how far you travel to photograph may be enough. These are decent cameras - a friend of mine has one an he likes it rather well, so don't let the lack of a big brand name throw you off - there is far more to a camera than the name badge it carries. Here are a couple of things that I would consider right off hand if it were me making this decision: - Randy

danger + opportunity ≠ crisis There is a widespread public misperception, particularly among the New Age sector, that the Chinese word for “crisis” is composed of elements that signify “danger” and “opportunity.” I first encountered this curious specimen of alleged oriental wisdom about ten years ago at an altitude of 35,000 feet sitting next to an American executive. He was intently studying a bound volume that had adopted this notorious formulation as the basic premise of its method for making increased profits even when the market is falling. This essay is by Victor H. A whole industry of pundits and therapists has grown up around this one grossly inaccurate statement. The explication of the Chinese word for crisis as made up of two components signifying danger and opportunity is due partly to wishful thinking, but mainly to a fundamental misunderstanding about how terms are formed in Mandarin and other Sinitic languages.
