ASPCA study: "Pretty" pups picked first | Animal Nation
Cute counts -- but so does personalityThe ASPCA is set to release a study revealing that "physical appearance" is the most important reason pet adopters give for choosing puppies from animal shelters. Cats, meanwhile, could rely on inner beauty; the numbers showed that "behavior with people" was the most important quality folks looked for in a feline. The ASPCA conducted the research from January to May of last year, gathering information at five shelters nationwide. VIDEO: Baby giraffe chases butterfly Dr. Shine Love + Sex: What his pet says about his romantic potential Other interesting stats included the relative importance of age to prospective adopters – it ranked as the most important factor for kitten shoppers, while those looking for adult dogs ranked it much lower – and the fact that a puppy's behavior with people, while less important (and presumably graded on a curve thanks to a lack of training), only lagged behind other factors by less than a percentage point.
Crystal Egg Geodes - Martha Stewart Easter
Geodes can be grown without using egg dye. The resulting crystals are clear to milky white, like quartz. While large chicken eggshells are suggested in this process, larger eggshells can be used. This Easter craft from Jim "Figgy" Noonan doubles as a science project, offering an opportunity to show kids the crystallization process at work. Resources: If you don't want to blow your own egg or would like to try a larger eggshell, pre-blown shells are available from The Eggery Place.
Why babies are geniuses at grammar
My 3-year-old son, Simon, sees no point in the to be verb. "This my Superman costume," he says. "Where my Batman boot?" I've always assumed he's just making a small-child's mistake, and if I don't correct him, that's mostly because it's too much bother. According to a new book by the Yale linguist Charles Yang, however, Simon is mirroring the grammar of a different language. Hebrew doesn't bother with is or are. Like almost everything in linguistics, Yang's idea stems from Noam Chomsky's theory that the human capacity for language is innate. The idea is a clever one. Still, Chomsky praised Yang's work and book via e-mail, and Yang's ideas may explain some of the speech patterns of small children. Consider this example of handicapping a child's speech development: In her book The Nurture Assumption, Judith Rich Harris tells the story of a 1933 experiment that a psychology professor and his wife conducted on their child. Some parents address this problem creatively.

In a small cabin built from a shipwrecked fishing vessel on South Patagonia’s Lake O’Higgins lives a cattle herder whose quiet life has become a legend. Amidst the region’s peaking fjords and flooded valleys, 81-year-old Faustino Barrientos has lived in complete solitude for 47 years with little to no interaction with outsiders other than his small cattle of sheep and cow. He, himself, is a mysterious man who keeps his secrets in solitude — reminiscent of The Old Man and the Sea. For four days, four Vice reporters took their cameras (and impressive North Face gear) to interrupt Faustino’s humble bunker to experience the quiet life of the gaucho. Aside from its seamless cinematography of Patagonia’s untouched scenery, the short documentary takes a captivating snapshot of Faustino’s true gaucho spirit. FOR OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS AMERICANS KNEW PIT BULLS FOR WHAT THEY DID BEST. BABYSITTING. | Yonah Ward Grossman
Astoundingly, for most of our history America’s nickname for Pit Bulls was “The Nanny Dog”. For generations if you had children and wanted to keep them safe you wanted a pit bull, the dog that was the most reliable of any breed with children or adults. The Nanny Dog is now vilified by a media that always wants a demon dog breed to frighten people and LHASA-APSO BITES MAN just doesn’t sell papers. Before pit bulls it was Rottweilers, before Rottweilers it was Dobermans, and before them German Shepherds. Each breed in it’s order were deemed too vicious and unpredictable to be around people. Each time people wanted laws to ban them. Part II of this post may be found at: My Fan Club:
Petra: Lost City of Stone
Deep within the deserts of Jordan lies the ancient city of Petra. Through a narrow gorge it emerges into view, revealing awe-inspiring monuments cut into the surrounding cliffs. What is this astonishing city? Who built it, and why? Two thousand years ago, Petra stood at a crossroads of the ancient Near East. The Nabataeans also erected monumental tombs, memorializing their kings and leaders. Today archaeologists are discovering clues to Petra's past. In New York, Petra: Lost City of Stone was made possible by Banc of America Securities and Con Edison.
