15 fascinating maps that will change the way you see the world How Your Grandparents' Lives Affect Your Resilience To Stress Can trauma, stress, and even nightmares be passed down from generation to generation? Scientists say yes. A number of research finds that those who have been traumatized around the time of conception can pass on a DNA code to their offspring that results in a higher vulnerability to stress in their molecules, neurons, cells, and genes. Furthermore, this gene expression—a chemical coating upon the chromosomes—is strong enough to be passed on to a third generation, which means grandchildren have "a kind of biological memory" of what their grandparents experienced, according to studies. This unconventional finding has led to a new scientific field of study called epigenetic inheritance. "Epigenetics is how your environment influences your genes," Tara Swart, a senior lecturer at MIT, tells Fast Company: So, what should be done now that we know trauma of previous generations can be passed down to future generations? One study concludes: ". . . Get The Best Stories In Leadership Every Day.

Bo Rothstein

Professional cuddler opens shop in Portland An unusual business has just opened in Portland. It offers professional cuddling services. The shop is called Cuddle Up To Me and owner Samantha Hess said it's as simple as it sounds. The shop is located near 10th and East Burnside and Hess said she has already been busy. “This business has taken off,” said Hess. Hess started her professional cuddling business in 2013. “I was at a place where I thought paying someone to hug me and not have ulterior motives sounded like a great idea,” said Hess. Photos: Professional cuddler opens shop in Portland Before Hess opened her shop, she would meet clients at the locations of their choosing, now her cuddling studio offers four themed rooms with cameras. “We can customize each session depending on your comfort level,” said Hess. Hess said “we” because she's no longer the only worker at her business. “People always think that there's upgrades or, you know, additional services that we provide, and that's not true,” said Hess.

70 years and half a trillion dollars later: what has the UN achieved? | World news It was Dag Hammarskjöld, the tragic second UN secretary general, who had it best. The United Nations, he said, “was created not to lead mankind to heaven but to save humanity from hell”. The kind of hell Hammarskjöld had in mind was not hard to imagine in the wake of world war and Hitler’s extermination camps, and with the atom bomb’s shadow spreading across the globe. How much of a part the UN played in holding nuclear armageddon at bay divides historians. The UN’s children’s organisation, Unicef, provided an education and a path to a better life for millions, including the present UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon. And yet. “Like everybody says, if you didn’t have the UN you’d have to invent it,” said David Shearer, who served the organisation in senior posts in Rwanda, Belgrade, Afghanistan, Iraq and Jerusalem. Even accounting for inflation, annual UN expenditure is 40 times higher than it was in the early 1950s. But that is just a small portion of the total spend.

Lasting Relationships Rely On 2 Traits Gottman wanted to know more about how the masters created that culture of love and intimacy, and how the disasters squashed it. In a follow-up study in 1990, he designed a lab on the University of Washington campus to look like a beautiful bed-and-breakfast retreat. He invited 130 newlywed couples to spend the day at this retreat and watched them as they did what couples normally do on vacation: cook, clean, listen to music, eat, chat, and hang out. And Gottman made a crucial discovery in this study—one that gets at the heart of why some relationships thrive while others languish. Throughout the day, partners would make requests for connection, what Gottman calls “bids.” The wife now has a choice. People who turned toward their partners in the study responded by engaging the bidder, showing interest and support in the bid. These bidding interactions had profound effects on marital well-being.

However, experience using FPIC in REDD+ implementation is still limited in the Asia-Pacific region, and there are few materials that explain and train practitioners in its concepts and practice. There is still subjective understanding of the terms and requirements of FPIC, influenced by both cultural interpretations and interests. To address this resource gap, RECOFTC is pleased to announce the publication of a new Training Manual on Putting Free, Prior, and Informed Consent into Practice in REDD+ Initiatives. This manual has been developed by Karen Edwards and Ronnakorn Triraganon with substantial inputs from Jim Stephenson, Dr. Read a blog by co-author Jim Stephenson introducing the importance of FPIC in natural resource management projects.
