This 800-year-old Icelandic hymn sung in a train station is utterly hauntin 28 September 2018, 15:15 This devotional hymn was originally written in 1208, but its mesmerising beauty is completely timeless – as this spontaneous performance in a station in Germany proves. Sometimes the most profound moments of music are the simplest. An Icelandic indie-folk group walked into a resonant space in a train station in the German city of Wuppertal – and then this happened. The group is Árstíðir, and the music is the 13th-century Icelandic hymn "Heyr himna smiður", and adapted by Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, one of Iceland's most important 20th-century composers. Join classical music's biggest community - like Classic FM on Facebook Following the success of this simple moment of music-making (the video has been viewed five million times), the choir recorded the song with Anneke van Giersbergen – find out more about that here. And if you fancy recreating this at your local train station, here's the sheet music of the hymn. In the mood for more vintage melodies?

It was his job to track radioactivity blowing from the smoking Chernobyl reactor in the hours after the 26 April explosion and deal with it. Forty-eight hours after the accident, an assistant handed him a roughly drawn map. On it, an arrow shot north-east from the nuclear power plant, and broadened to become a river of air 10 miles wide that was surging across Belarus toward Russia. If the slow-moving mass of radioactive clouds reached Moscow, where a spring storm front was piling up, millions could be harmed. So that day, in a Moscow airport, technicians loaded artillery shells with silver iodide. In the sleepy towns of southern Belarus, villagers looked up to see planes with strange yellow and grey contrails snaking across the sky. Two months later, however, levels rose yet higher to 10,000 bq/m2 in Cumbria and 20,000 bq/m2 in south-western Scotland, 4,000 times higher than normal.
Tiger Lillies : Home It’s Time to Admit That Anti-Vaxxers are Terrorists Fringe conspiracy-theorist terrorists, called ‘anti-vaxxers’ are multiplying so fast that some counties, cities, and states have vaccination rates below community or ‘herd’ immunity levels across the U.S. With more parents buying into the conspiracy that vaccines contain toxins, cause autism, and are unsafe, children, the elderly, and immunocompromised are suffering. These people need to be called out for what they are; anti-vaxxers are terrorists that kill and harm our children. Even if you oppose anti-vaxxers, you might think it’s too extreme to use the “terrorist” label in this case. In 1998 the anti-vaccine movement gained traction when a now discredited and disbarred physician, Andrew Wakefield published a study suggesting a link between vaccines and autism. The Lancet retracted his study in 2010, and the UK General Medical Council disbarred him following an extensive investigation. However, between 1998-2010, the study remained active online and in the Lancet archives.

Not only that, they've shown the fractal light could be created in 3D rather than just 2D. Displaying one of nature's most common patterns from a very human-made technology could open up opportunities in all kinds of communication and imaging fields, the team behind the breakthrough says. You don't have to look for long to see these geometrical masterpieces in nature – they're everywhere from snowflakes to salt flats – but it turns out that discovering them in a beam of laser light requires some very carefully calibrated observations. Fractal pattern cross-section. "What is amazing is that, as predicted, the only requirement to demonstrate the effect is a simple laser with two polished spherical mirrors," says one of the researchers, Johannes Courtial from the University of Glasgow in the UK. EU – It's time for a change!
70 Quotes for Žižek’s 70th Birthday March 21, 1949, is the birthdate of the man who – until the arrival of Melania Trump – was arguably the most famous living Slovene, the “rock star philosopher” and Ljubljana-native Slavoj Žižek, who can still be seen walking the streets of the city when not holed up in his apartment writing or travelling to one of his many lectures, debates, interviews or other public appearances around the world. So in honour of the 70th birthday of man who’s done so much to put his hometown and country on the international intellectual map, we present 70 quotes on various topics and in no particular order to make you think, smile, frown or throw your electronic device across the room in frustration. Vse najboljše, Mr Žižek, and for the rest of you – enjoy your symptoms! Without the communist oppression, I am absolutely sure I would now be a local stupid professor of philosophy in Ljubljana.
