Windows XP SP3's Aches, Pains, and User Complaints Even though my SP3 update went well, maybe yours didn't. So far, I've heard from about a dozen readers experiencing problem installations. This week, I share a few complaints and show you a fix for one of the most common errors. Fix for Debug Version Issue A couple weeks back, Senior Editor Denny Arar posted "Windows XP SP3 Available for Download" and she supplied a link to the download--problem was, she pointed to a version for developers ("This installation package is intended for IT professionals and developers downloading to a machine intending to debug or develop software on Windows XP Service Pack 3") and some users encountered an error. The installation error that some folks saw--"Service Pack 3 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 3, or vice versa"--is complete gibberish, of course. End of an era: Philips sells off consumer electronics division | Gadgets Philips has decided to get out of the consumer electronics market, no doubt causing consumers everywhere to either feel nostalgic about the end of a legend, or to think, “Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that company.” It seem Philips has been unable to successfully compete against companies like Samsung and Sony in such a frenetic and quickly evolving industry, and have instead decided to throw in the towel. Philips used to be a titan of consumer electronics, dating back to the 1930s when it was the top seller of radios. It then later invented audio cassette and VCR, and was later responsible for creating the CD medium. It would go on to be a successful supplier of DVD and Blu-ray players. Philips also used to be a major player in the TV business, but it exited that market last year, leaving its consumer electronics department almost entirely rooted in increasingly obsolete technology. Although Philips has a lot to be concerned about, it has shown growth in other divisions.
