OER Basics - Open Textbooks, OER & Other Open or Free Resources for Faculty - LibGuides at Kirkwood Community College Libraries Q: It's nice to save students money, but my students truly need print books. Doesn't that mean I need to stick with traditional textbook publishers? A: There is always a print option for OER. If a printed copy isn't available, or if you are using your own compilation of OER (and/or some copyrighted materials that you've determined fall under fair use), the Kirkwood Bookstore will work with you to create a course pack for your students to purchase at the Bookstore, again, at a substantially lower cost than a traditional textbook. Q: I understand that textbooks can be very expensive, but I don't want to take business away from our bookstore. A: There are a few different responses to this concern. Q: As a faculty I depend on the test banks that publishers provide with a textbook adoption. A: Many open resources do provide test banks (and power points, and other supplementals we're used to getting from a publisher). Do you have a question about OER?

OpenCourseWare There is Such a Thing as a Free Lunch: 8 Free and Easy Ways to B 0 Comments December 14, 2009 By: Tech Learning Blog Staff Dec 14 Written by: 12/14/2009 5:03 AM ShareThis by Lisa Nielsen cross posted at The Innovative Educator I recently attended a conference where I ran into a couple out-of-touch old timers who wanted to explain to me why things are the way they are. Listening to these guys made me want to scream. The two men looked at me and then each other shaking their heads. So, I retorted. People like these old-timers need to hold on to this reality and convince others of it’s truth not only because folks are resist to change, but because it keeps them employed. There is a lot at stake for these old timers and big businesses if educators don't believe their in-the-past reality. 8 Free and Easy Tools Innovative Educators Can Start Using Today The following tools are all free and simple to use. Overview:Educators know that getting audience feedback is important, but how often does a teacher really know what her students are thinking and feeling?
