The Ronettes on Spotify The Ronettes were formed in the Washington Heights/Spanish Harlem area of New York City. Sisters Veronica (aka Ronnie) and Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley first started harmonizing together as teenagers in 1959, inspired by doo wop groups like Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers and Little Anthony & the Imperials. First calling themselves the Darling Sisters, the trio also worked on their dance moves, and won the famed amateur talent contest at the Apollo Theater; afterward, they began formal vocal training. In 1961, they were standing in line to get into the Peppermint Lounge -- epicenter of the twist dance craze -- when a manager mistook them for an act he'd booked. The Ronettes caught their big break when they met Phil Spector, who saw in them talent he could mold to his specifications; he was already tiring of his association with the Crystals, substituting outside singer Darlene Love on several records credited to them.

Daar had kunstenaar Wouter Huis, een grote rode ballon geplaatst op het dak van de Vooruit, met daarbij de boodschap ,You are not here'. De kunstenaar wou daarmee de draak steken met de profileringsdrang van steden en met de groeiende behoefte van mensen om via sociale media te melden waar ze zich bevinden. Welnu de ballon van Huis hing er nog geen volle dag.

De gespecialiseerde website spaceweatherlive had maandag gemeld dat er 73 procent kans was op poollicht, maar dat blijkt alleen te gelden voor gebieden die op een hoge breedtegraad liggen, zoals Ijsland of Scandinavië. In die gebieden is poollicht ook niet zo uitzonderlijk. In ons land is het poollicht echter niet te zien, meldt Jan Cuypers van de Koninklijke Sterrrenwacht van België. Geladen deeltjes Dat er dezer dagen op onze planeet mogelijk poollicht te zien zal zijn, heeft te maken met de aankomst van een CME (’Coronal Mass Ejection’) van de zon, een stroom van geladen deeltjes afkomstig van onze ster. Het elektromagnetisch veld rondom onze planeet zorgt er dan voor dat de deeltjesstroom in de omgeving van de Aarde wordt afgebogen en in de buurt van de polen met verhoogde snelheid de atmosfeer binnenkomt. Overigens is de activiteit op de Zon nog toegenomen vanwege een nieuwe zware uitbarsting maandag.

Volgt hij daarmee N-VA-voorzitter Bart De Wever? ‘Neen, ik was eerst', zegt Peeters. En eigenlijk verkiest hij een Scandinavisch model. Vlaams minister-president Kris Peeters (CD&V) is niet zo pessimistisch over de industrie in Vlaanderen, zo zegt hij in een interview met De Standaard. ‘Wie denkt dat de industrie in Vlaanderen stervend is, vergist zich. Zijn industrieel beleid duwt de bedrijven in de richting van de nieuwe groeimarkten, zegt hij. ‘En in de richting van de Duitse markt en de Duitse aanpak. Ook N-VA-leider Bart De Wever zei eerder deze week dat Duitsland het model is voor de Vlamingen. ‘Ik volg De Wever niet. Peeters weet dat in Duitsland vaak terecht geklaagd wordt over heel lage lonen voor sommige jobs. 'Vlaanderen kan heel veel leren van Duitsland, maar het moet er geen copy-paste van worden. Peeters ziet ook elders goede voorbeelden, zegt hij aan De Standaard.
De Wever: ‘Vlaanderen wil Duitsland volgen, Wallonië kiest... In een interview met het Franse persagentschap AFP zegt N-VA-voorzitter Bart De Wever dat de spanningen tussen Vlaanderen en Wallonië niet langer houdbaar zijn. ‘België is een optelsom van twee democratieën: er is geen nationale taal, er zijn geen nationale kranten of nationale partijen. Zoiets bestaat nergens anders. De ene democratie wordt gedomineerd door de linkerzijde en de andere, Vlaamse democratie door de N-VA. Vlaanderen wil de Duitse weg volgen - van de hervorming - terwijl Wallonië het Franse voorbeeld van François Hollande wil volgen: uitgaven, uitgaven, uitgaven.’ Volgens De Wever is die spanning niet langer houdbaar. AFP vroeg De Wever ook of zijn grote doel - de onafhankelijkheid van Vlaanderen - als voorbeeld voor andere Europese regio’s zou kunnen dienen.
