Powerhouse Company Rooms with many views Villa 1 was Powerhouse Company’s first project: our chance to present our manifesto to the world. We were a fledgling practice then, working from kitchen-table offices in Rotterdam and Copenhagen. But we knew exactly what we wanted to build (a house with great spatial qualities and meticulous detailing) and how we wanted to build it (in a smooth, service-driven process). The design of Villa 1 was inspired by the site, the clients’ paradoxical desire to live “in a modern glass house with all the cosiness of an old farmhouse”, and by Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House and the work of Saarinen. The project embodies our ideas about professionalism. The site: a manufactured forest The plot was in a wood which, like so much of Dutch nature, is entirely manmade. Because the house’s spatial needs required twice the volume allowed by the regulations, we designed it upside down, placing all the bedrooms underground with the daytime functions on top. Why oh Y? From the Dossin Barracks, 25,267 people were deported to concentration camps in Germany and Poland during WWII. In the 1970’s, the building was subdivided into apartments. Contrary to what one might think, the new museum is not housed in the barracks itself, the site where the deportation occurred. The house of detention’s original, ruined wall is complemented by a new wall clearly defining the museum’s boundaries. The open square between the barracks and the museum’s forecourt wall has been paved over.

About On a tiny plot, LOW architecten proposes the concept of a structure that ‘overgrows’ the old 19th century house. Brief The brief is to design a state of the art building, housing a variety of functions; to almost ‘build’ extra space in the old city centre and to create a very warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests and residents. Concept LOW transforms a single house into a guesthouse and duplex penthouse. Integration & morphology The new volume blends in perfectly with its surroundings, yet it evokes an interesting dialogue between old and new. Materials used The contrast in material between old and new contributes to the overall appeal of the guesthouse in a neighbourhood consisting mainly of neo-classical dwellings.
