Ethical investment is more than beating one bastard while funding three others | Third Sector blog | Third Sector blogs As part of ethical investment week, now drawing to a close, the Charity Finance Group published a survey of its members that found that just over half had any sort of ethical investment policy, and that of those who did, most only used “negative screening”, where they avoid companies which have activities that go against the charity’s aims. There is little, in short, to suggest that charities are displaying higher ethical standards in their investment than the average man on the street. This is a bit of a worry. If charities don’t have any sort of ethical investment policy, it makes it almost certain that they’re investing money in someone, somewhere, who is doing something harmful to their beneficiaries. Charities are supposed to act ethically, after all. It’s also perhaps disappointing that most that have ethical policies are worried only about their own beneficiaries. Charities’ attitudes also seems to be at odds with what the wider public want from them.

Laura Ingraham Using Cartoons To Make Sense of Your Data Note From Beth: If you’ve picked up a copy of the newly released “Measuring the Networked Nonprofit: Using Data to Change the World” than you no doubt noticed the cartoons, created by Rob Cottingham, that begin each chapter. Rob worked with us as we developed each chapter to pick out the key idea and poke of at it – we wanted to write a book about measurement that was accessible and fun to read. But, cartoons can be terrific infographics or used as technique for sense-making. Cartoons are good communication tool. Because of the combination of humor and brevity, cartoons are a great way for your organization to share information and ideas. Cartoons can encapsulate an idea or message with a single image, people pressed for time can absorb them quickly and share them more easily.Okay, you like the idea of using cartoons to visualize your data or communicate your ideas. DRUDGE REPORT 2012® Embracing Three New Megatrends in the Brave New World of Digital Media World Net Daily Text smaller Text bigger The Internal Revenue Service has lost a lawyer’s challenge in front of a jury to prove a constitutional foundation for the nation’s income tax, and the victorious attorney now is setting his sights higher. “I think now people are beginning to realize that this has got to be the largest fraud, backed up by intimidation and extortion and by the sheer force of taking peoples property and hard-earned money without any lawful authorization whatsoever,” lawyer Tom Cryer told WND just days after a jury in Louisiana acquitted him of two criminal tax counts. And before you consign him to the legions of “tin foil hat brigades” who argue against paying taxes, and then want payment to explain how to do that, he addresses the issue up front. The truth, he said, is where he comes in, with the launch of a new Truth Attack website that is intended to build on his victory, and create a coalition of resources to defeat – ultimately – the income tax in the United States. ‘Dr.

Unfortunately, they seem to have jumped the shark a bit lately with companies cranking out any old thing and sticking the "infographic" title on it. We get tons of pitches from companies about their latest infographics, but only a small fraction actually make the cut. They Don't Visualize Data Once upon a time, infographics performed a really valuable function. Now, it's not absolutely mandatory for an infographic to visualize hard data. You can also use infographics to tell a (short) story. But many other infographics just slop together some random facts and figures without contributing much at all. Too Company Specific or Self-Promotional Companies put together infographics because they want to connect with people, and they know that people love infographics. This is a common problem with marketing in general. Ugly Graphics Not all graphic designers are created equal, sorry. Requires Flash

Do Multiscreen Experiences Fragment Attention, or Focus It? When was the last time you watched television without simultaneously interacting with a second, third, or fourth screen? A smartphone, tablet, or Xbox? Without tweeting, IMing, or posting to Facebook? A plethora of devices, as well as social media are changing the way we watch, particularly when viewing is tied to an event – last night’s vice presidential debates, for example. Viewing is likely more often than not a multiscreen experience: there’s the televisions (or a live video screen), as well as additional screens (tablet, phone) and activity (reading, tweeting, commenting). Do all these screens, and all this activity, fragment attention? Or am I wrong about this? inShare Like this: Like Loading... The AFP Fundraising Resource Center Blog of Blogs
