Authors, Are You Too Old to Make It? Most writers are hoping for recognition of one sort or another. You believe in yourself and hope to “make it” one day. But with every passing year we get older and we begin to fear that our big opportunities have slipped away. Is your age an attribute or handicap? You’re a writer, not a teen-pop musician. And yet—age is still a sensitive subject in the literary world. In the editor’s notes for the most recent issue of Poets & Writers, you’ll find two cases of authors who are self-conscious about their age. But here’s the truth of it: worrying about your age, and about what the world expects of you at various phases of your life—those are commercial concerns. Whatever aspects of a literary life you think you’ve missed the boat on (meeting agents, making connections, wowing the world as some precocious wunderkind, looking beautiful in your head-shot, etc.) Slow simmer vs. flash fry I take comfort in the fact that someone 40 years old is still considered a “young poet.” How about you?
