Des infos sur la librairie | lebazartdesmots In sleep the body is a channel to communicate with the dreaming mind Most of us have had a nightmare or a few. They’re a normal response to stress. But for a significant minority of people, they’re so frequent – about 5 per cent of the population experiences nightmares on a weekly basis or worse – that the disruption to sleep can be severely harmful to mental health, increasing symptoms of anxiety, depression and even suicide risk. People who experience frequent nightmares can feel helpless, doomed to relive disturbing dreams on any given night. I was on a bus. For people who experience frequent nightmares, sleep becomes a constant source of fear and restlessness rather than respite. I’m a dream scientist. Updates on everything new at Aeon. Over the past decade, I’ve worked in sleep laboratories all around the world. When I woke up, I knew that this was what I wanted to study; I wanted to explore the world of dreaming through scientific sleep research. To influence dreams, dream engineers need to understand the processes that shape dream content. Okay.

Recognising the rhythm in addiction offers new ways to escape it | Psyche Ideas Barut was a heavy user of heroin substitutes and crack when we met in Paris in 2014. He’d grown up in what he called a ‘broken home’ in Bulgaria, and started with hard drugs early. Heroin then caught him during construction jobs in Spain and later in Paris. Having gone through another unsuccessful rehab programme just before we met, Barut spent most of his days at the Gare du Nord, Europe’s busiest train station. His life revolved around drugs. His mornings often started just outside the city centre, in an underground parking lot or abandoned train. The need for generating funds kept Barut busy and created a repetitive cycle of begging, scoring and consuming – often repeated a dozen times a day or more. Barut is one of almost 270 million people around the world who consumed drugs in 2018, a 30 per cent increase on the 10 years before. People who consume crack and inject heroin are often forced to focus on procurement and consumption in the present

Antropocene Da Wikipedia, l'enciclopedia libera.

Effetti dell'infibulazione[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

What’s Wrong with the Way We Work Both artisans and factory workers therefore fought for fewer hours and higher wages. The gains they extracted from governments were hard-won, and stinting. In 1819, the British Parliament passed a Factory Act that barred the employment of children under the age of nine in cotton mills. An 1833 law capped the number of mill hours worked by children between thirteen and eighteen at twelve per day. Finally, by the second half of the nineteenth century, some of the economic rewards of this system reached the workers themselves; goods were vastly cheaper. Anomie is one thing, poverty another. In stepped heritage tourism and the hobby industry. The do-it-yourself movement, a craft craze, took off in the nineteen-fifties. The leisure that Keynes predicted never came. The problem with the argument that it’s stupid to look for meaning in work—a form of false consciousness to find purpose in your job—and rare to love what you do is that it’s wrong. Terkel loved his job as a radio broadcaster.

What If You Could Do It All Over? Once, in another life, I was a tech founder. It was the late nineties, when the Web was young, and everyone was trying to cash in on the dot-com boom. In college, two of my dorm mates and I discovered that we’d each started an Internet company in high school, and we merged them to form a single, teen-age megacorp. For around six hundred dollars a month, we rented office space in the basement of a building in town. We made Web sites and software for an early dating service, an insurance-claims-processing firm, and an online store where customers could “bargain” with a cartoon avatar for overstock goods. I lived large, spending the money I made on tuition, food, and a stereo. In 1999—our sophomore year—we hit it big. I liked this entrepreneurial existence—its ambition, its scrappy, near-future velocity. “The thought that I might have become someone else is so bland that dwelling on it sometimes seems fatuous,” the literary scholar Andrew H.
