Hair Chalking On the Mirror/ Mirror shoot I learned about this new temporary hair coloring technique using soft wax pastels ( like the crayon, not really chalk). It was so easy to get this cool dip-dyed look, that I tried it when I got home! Here is how to get started- The Rembrandt brand pastels work the best and have the most variety of colors. Wear latex gloves ( your hands and manicure will be very colorful if you skip this step, I found this out the hard way). Drape a towel around your neck and on the floor ( it can get a little messy). Here are the steps to coloring your hair with pastels- -Use a spray bottle filled with water to dampen small pieces of hair. -Hold the stand of hair tight and rub on desired color of pastels to hair in a downward motion several times until the color catches. -When satisfied with your colors-curl pieces of hair using a normal curling iron on low heat. To remove the color completely, shampoo 2 to 3 times. My hair! By the way!

manic[ure] monday: “something borrowed” « A Pretty Penny Last night I suffered through watched Something Borrowed on DVD. I heard all the terrible reviews, but being the big Kate Hudson fan I am, I thought I needed to see it for myself. Unfortunately, I can’t get those two hours back, but I did spot a cute mani on Kate in one scene. It was a modern french manicure with a beige base, black tips, and a little bit of gold. Cue the lineup! Start with clean nails and a thin coat of base. Next, apply two coats of beige polish to the entire nail. After the beige polish is bone dry, apply french manicure strips to each nail. More drying time! Adding the gold line is the trickiest part. I sealed everything up with two good coats of the all-in-one base (which actually helped mask some of the imperfections). Like this: Like Loading...

Check out her other tutorials here and of course give her blog an auld goo. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. So the way I did this was this: first of all create a fine line right at the root of the lashes to make sure there’s absolutely no gaps or bits of skin showing through.Next, thicken out the line a little bit, but not too much.To make the wing, follow the angle of your waterline but make sure you start at the very outest corner of your eye, otherwise it can make your eyes look smaller than they really are.Take the flick up as high as the crease colour (crazy I know) and then pull it back. Now you can thicken out the rest of the liner, you’ll know how thick to make the line by looking forward into a mirror and making sure you can still see a little bit of the lid.If your lid disappears, you’ve made the line too thick. 8. 9. 10. 11. 13. 14.

Get Yo’ Nails Did Okay, so we’re only three weeks in to this whole thing and I’m already showing you a tame look after I totally promised some of you that I’d do a newsprint nail tutorial this week. Newsprint we can do next week, but for right now I wanted/needed a manicure by a professional. As I told you in the first “Get Yo’ Nails Did”, it’s important to include real manicures in your nail routine if you’re not comfortable cutting your cuticles and getting into the real work at home. I am not. I’m willing to shell out $20 bucks to have the dirty work done right, but I’m not going to splurge on nail art at the salon most of the time. That’s another thing: Remember that, while you should always be extremely polite to your manicurist, you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for exactly what you want and to tell him/her if it’s not done correctly. For your own mental health, try to avoid those nail salons that feel more like cattle farms. The last thing I’m afraid of (beside death) is a little bit of contrast.

How To: Metallic Smokey Eye I love a good metallic smokey eye. The key to a metallic smokey eye is knowing where to apply the shimmer, and where to keep it matte. If done right, it creates a really sultry look. If done wrong, it will look like Snooki. No offense, Snooki. Step one: Apply a neutral colored base coat or primer to the lid, from the lash line clear to the brow. Step two: Apply a shimmery color from the lash line up until you almost reach the crease, from inner corner to outer corner, covering the entire lid. Step three: Apply a dark matte color in the crease, starting in the outer corner and fading in. Step four: Apply the same shimmery color across your lower lash line, from inner corner to outer corner. Step five: Apply black liner in the water line from inner corner to outer corner. Step six: Finish with black mascara.
