Occupy Wall Street protests - Wednesday 6 October 2011 | World news 10am: Good morning and welcome to the Guardian's coverage of the occupy demonstrations across the US. The protests continue to grow and widen, with Occupy Wall Street remaining the frontrunner. Today hundreds of union members are expected to march to the demonstration at Zuccotti Park in solidarity with the protesters there, while a national student walkout is also planned in protest against rising tuition fees and levels of student debt. As Associated Press reported this morning: Among those planning to join the clamor on Wednesday are the liberal group MoveOn.org and community organizations like the Working Families Party and United NY. The growing crowd will also include members of the Chinatown Tenants Union and the Transit Workers Union, signaling that a protest that started out small is showing no signs of losing steam. Elsewhere planning continues for further occupations in the US, with more demonstrations expected on Thursday. From the October 2011 website: He writes:
OWS - Computer by Youphil
St Paul's may seek injunction to move Occupy London activists | UK news Officials from St Paul's Cathedral and the wider City district are considering legal action to force protesters to remove a camp set up outside the church more than a week ago, following an impasse between the two sides. The cathedral has been shut since Friday afternoon after its dean, the Right Reverend Graeme Knowles, said the presence of more than 200 tents and marquees beside the building's western edge was an unacceptable fire, and health and safety risk. Both he and the cathedral's canon chancellor, Giles Fraser, have publicly urged the activists to leave. The Occupy the London Stock Exchange movement, part of a wave of similar global protests against the perceived excesses of the financial and banking systems, says it is sympathetic to the cathedral's plight but believes the closure is an overreaction. With the deadlock seemingly set to continue, St Paul's and other nearby institutions have consulted lawyers about possible efforts to forcibly evict the protesters.
A critique of the #OccupyWallStreet tactics: Leaderlessness does not mean a lack of direction Participants in Occupy Wall Street, and the other viral snowclones that emerge for it, would be doing themselves a service by critically approaching this central question: there are no shortcuts, there are no easy victories. The Financial-Industrial complex that rules the USA, the crumbling Empire that feeds it, the nuclear deterrent that holds the world hostage is not easy to beat. And it cannot be beaten, no matter how hard you will it to be, without leadership and direction. Leaderless resistance is a self-kettle, a straight-jacket that will keep the movement from acquiring the true mass, political, basis that can enable actual change to happen. Excerpted from SKS: “The strategy and tactic of leaderless resistance is not actually being followed as prescribed by its creators. One of the unintended consequences is that in the context of a lack of leadership and direction is that the State, and their enforcers, the police, become the leaders and directors of the mass.
Vatican joins calls for crackdown on financial markets | Business A Vatican thinktank is calling for a global authority to police the financial markets. Above, the pope surrounded by cardinals. Photograph: Tony Gentile/Reuters If Vatican cardinals have yet to join the Occupy Wall Street protesters, a document released by the Holy See calling for a "world authority" to crack down on capitalism suggests some are considering it. Written by the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and released on Monday, Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority, suggests a beefed-up United Nations could police the financial markets and inject a dose of ethics to replace rampant profiteering and reduce inequality. The pamphlet claims that in combination with a "central world bank", such an authority would help restore "the primacy of the spiritual and of ethics", as well as "the primacy of politics – which is responsible for the common good – over the economy and finance".
Launch of a #ows currency design competition at Occupy Wall Street Many of Wall Street's occupiers understand that austerity comes from a shortage of money, not resources, and that the right to issue money is granted by the government to a banking cartel. Most US citizens have no understanding of what money is and how it is make artificially scarce to compel them to compete against one another in converting natural resources into "economic growth." Money need not be a destructive force which, through interest, centralises wealth and power. In order to ensure the new certificates will are as attractive and relevant as possible, we are launching a design competition, for the next seven days. We are thankful to the p2p foundation for hosting. The competition will be followed by a series of 'money' workshops at Liberty Plaza on Monday 24th October, and the currency launched soon after.
