Fascinating Lamps by Calabarte | Pondly - StumbleUpon Calabarte is the pseudonym of a Polish artist named Przemek Krawczynski, whose art takes on a peculiar but incredibly beautiful form: cool lamps. The name itself is a portmanteau of two words – art (obviously), and calabash, the fruit that carries his imagination. The calabash is a bottle gourd originating in India, although Calabarte gets his supply from Senegal. Due to ancient domestication and usage, the bottle gourd has an incredibly tough outer shell. Due to the combination of dark, thick material with a light source within, the primary art of his work, however, shines in the dark. Hard work, beauty, an exceptional degree of detail and a marriage between mathematical geometry and a rampant imagination – all imprinted onto the husk of a Senegal calabash. Described as the art of light, Calabarte’s artistic tendencies truly took off in 2009, when he made his first gourd lamp, by chance of coming across a calabash. Website
Cradle Chair: Big Basket Seat Rocks Adults Gently to Sleep | Designs &I... There is no escaping those innate and early-learned associations – for some, it means sleeping to gentle noises on planes, and for others, the act of rocking tilts us softly into a deep slumber. Richard Clarkson and company wanted to create a kind of low-tech, sensory-deprivation, sofa-style seat where one can curl up and forget the workaday worries of ordinary life … and perhaps even doze over before you notice you are slowly falling asleep. While there is art and craft in this object, there is science that went into its design as well. For all its theoretical complexity, the final form looks quite simple (and extremely comfortable).

Monthly Measure by Sebastian Bergne Monthly Measure is a brilliant new desktop calendar by Sebastian Bergne (previously here and here) made from a metal gear etched with days of the week that rolls along a slotted piece of wood imprinted with numbers of the month. If that’s not enough awesome for you, the numbers are placed a centimeter apart so it also functions as a metric ruler. The calendar is being released this weekend at Maison&Objet and will hopefully be available in his shop soon. Hand Stitching, part 1 - LA One of my favorite crafts is hand stitching-- it's fun, addictive, expressive and relaxing :) Over the next few weeks, I'm going to share easy ways to make your own patterns for hand stitching along with some tips and ideas :) These are some samples of my past projects-- I like to draw patterns freehand and use my handwriting. However, sometimes I adapt clipart type images to make a more complicated pattern, like the sewing machine or I just stitch the outline of an image I love, like the Goonies "Hey You Guys" silhouette :) I use a Back Stitch for all my hand stitching because it's very versatile and I like the look but you can use any combination of stitches for your projects... there's lots of fun ones! Today, we're going to start with handwriting & transferring your pattern :) You will Need: - Card-stock or Thick Paper (I cut a piece of 6x8" card-stock & folded it in half to create a greeting card) - Needle & Scissors - Embroidery Thread - Scrap Paper & Pen - Thumbtack or Piercing Tool
Top 5 Friday: Upcycling Ideas (Start As One Thing, End As Another!) - Style... Whether you call it upcycling, reusing, refurbishing or reimagining, today's Top 5 Friday is all about finding decor inspiration and doing it yourself. Headboard From Wooden Skids (aka Pallets) This idea came courtesy of Julia Black from Pure Design, who hosted a video series for us called The Green Geek. Watch how she transformed three skids and some salvaged wood into a beachy white headboard for a queen size bed (three skids are the perfect size!). Chair Turned Bathroom Caddy Image: Pink to Green blog (via French Charming, originally from Country Living) This is one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" Large Wooden Spool Turned Art Table/Coffee Table Image: Design*Sponge I was actually inspired last night at the bus stop (in front of a condo construction project) by four large wooden spools just sitting around, just the perfect size and shape for my current coffee table conundrum. Vintage Crates Turned Storage Images: Apartment Therapy This isn't a new idea, but it's a good one!
