DIY Projects, Communities and Cultures We adopt the Wikipedia definition of DIY (Do It Yourself) as any creation, modification or repair of objects without the aid of paid professionals. DIY practices predate recorded history as human survival often relied on the ability to repair and repurpose tools and materials. Over the past few decades, new materials and sharing mechanisms have led to a wider adoption of DIY culture. One of the earliest “modern era” DIY communities formed among amateur radio hobbyists in the 1920’s. Ham radio communication continued even during World War II, when a ban was placed on amateur radio communication. Starting in the 1970's, enthusiasts created 'zines' to express the punk aesthetic.
The red flag of rising inventories By James Cooke An overview study of logistic costs in the U.S. economy should serve as a red flag for electrical distributors—showing that more of them need to take action to better control their inventory. The report showed that while retailers have managed this past year to keep their inventories in check, wholesalers and manufacturers did not in 2011. What is less well recognised are the possible links between these two issues in the Congo and the supply-chain which connects both of these issues to consumers. Are international global consumers complicit in rapes perpetrated in the Congo? Perhaps. Certainly there should be a wider acknowledgement of the role ‘vital’ electronic goods play in the perpetration of sexual violence against women - and in some cases men.
