EmailShare 484EmailShare So you want to build a membership site huh? Deciding to do it is the easy part! Once that decision is made there are SO many different factors that go into the actual creation of the site. Unlike a simple WordPress blog, where you can basically install and go, a membership site has MANY more components. Bottom line, it can be really daunting. That said, it doesn’t have to be. First off, let’s clarify why I’d be qualified to write such a post. Last September I launched my first membership site “Overcoming the Fear of Uncertainty“. How to Become an SEO Freelancer in 48 Hours EmailShare 376EmailShare I’d like to state up front that this is the longest post I’ve ever written here at Location 180. It’s more representative of the direction I’d like to take the site in the future, and is the culmination of the last year I’ve spent becoming an seo freelancer. If you take a weekend, read the resources provided, practice with your own site(s), you’ll have enough knowledge to lay the ground work of a location independent business. I’ve been getting a lot of emails lately from people who are looking to start working for themselves. Along with questions about building a business, I’m asked frequently what business I run. If we’re going to start getting real about creating a location independent income, I’m going to have to build a little bit of credibilty. So here’s what I do: I’m an SEO Freelancer (for lack of a better term). For those of you who don’t know what SEO means, it stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is false. 2 Location Independent Jobs : Join Our Team or Live for Free in a Resort in the Philippines this post describes two job opportunities. The first is a full-time position and a direct report to me. We’re looking for somebody to help manage and improve our community . The Tropical MBA started in late 2009. I could, however, afford to pay somebody enough money to be a backpacker style traveler. Since 2009, in one way or another, we’ve sponsored over 10 “internships” (each job posting has different terms, some are not internships but jobs– please read the listings carefully). Since that time, I’ve recorded 100′s of podcasts , so it’s pretty easy to get an idea where I’m coming from. Ok. The Dynamite Circle is an online community for digital nomads and location independent entrepreneurs. We also have conferences every 6 months– this year in Berlin and Bangkok– where we all get together, enjoy talks from luminaries in our community, and (ahem) have a little bit of a party. As the DC grows, our needs continue to evolve. Good luck! So what’s the catch? That’s it! Cheers! Dan

How to Create a Product in China (And Make $100k in a Week) EmailShare 379EmailShare Last April I decided to take a trip to China and see what kinds of opportunities I could find for myself over there. I had three potential markets in mind that I wanted to explore: Wood WatchesBackpacks for the “flashpacker”Opportunities to import into China. The one I was most excited about at the time were the watches. There was a ton of potential in the market, as few people had really started looking into opportunities with making watches out of wood. I enlisted a couple friends of mine who knew more than I did about manufacturing and doing business in China, and headed to one of the world’s largest sourcing events: The Canton Fair. Here you can literally find someone to make you anything you want. So obviously there was a plethora of watch companies that will make you exactly what you were looking for. Well, for various reasons I decided it wasn’t the right time for me to start manufacturing. Enter Ryan Beltran. The difference between us? Absolutely.

www.locationrebel.com/members/bonus-content/how-to-start-a-blog Bonus Content How to Start a Blog This was orignally featured in Overcoming the Fear of Uncertainty but has since been updated to be more relevant to building a blog within the Location Rebel program. Glad to see you made it this far! When I first started Location 180, I made A LOT of mistakes. So, why am I writing this guide when there are literally dozens of other resources about the same topic? Alright, you ready to dig into this? What Do You Really Want to Change? One thing I’d like to reiterate is that a blog is not critical to your success in Location Rebel. However, you can do that with a more simple website and a “services” landing page. All the same, you need to decide if your blog is going to be for business, personal or both. I definitely think going that route allows people to relate to you better. The more thought you can put into the goals of your new site, the better off you’re going to be because you’ll have direction. So, you think it’s right for you?

The girl thought about it for a few seconds, replied, ‘Hmm…I like pretty images. She then looked at me and said, “So, where are you from? From that day I knew it: I had to make email marketing my #1 priority. Why Email Marketing? If you didn’t get the memo, email marketing is much, much, much more profitable than any other type of online marketing. Why? How much time do you spend using Twitter to market your site? Instead, focus on your email list. The general rule of thumb is that an email list’s value is $1 / subscriber / month. My Most Recent Guest Post My jaw dropped—my wine glass almost did, too. There once was a retired engineer who is asked to come fix a major malfunction in a company’s product. “How could you possibly charge that much!” “Simple,” the old man responded. Mentor, one of my readers who blogs at Skillcollector and co-owns Hoasted Webhosting, argues that a lot of the difficulty in getting started in your own online, location-independent business, is simply knowing which switch to flip—that specific example or step-by-step method to get your first business launched. I’ve taught dozens of students how to build a successful online business, so it’s always a pleasure to hear some of the success stories. I’ll let Mentor take it away.

Wireframing your web application There are many “right” ways to design an application, so I want to be clear that this is my workflow (and the one I recommend), but it’s not mandatory. I know other designers who just jump right into Photoshop (or code) and produce great work. But if you find yourself having trouble visualizing a design or workflow in your head, give this method a try. The mental model The hardest part of designing any application is picturing the entire thing in your head. My solution is to get it out of my head and onto paper. I use either blank sheets of standard printer paper or, lately, the DotGrid book from Behance. On the right side of the paper I usually make two lists: The first is a feature list of sorts. The second is a list of questions to save for later. Which email delivery provider should I use? At the time I had some ideas about each of these, but certainly didn’t have the answer. Postage stamps The Workflow When I plan out interactions between screens, I think I have everything covered. Yay!

The Most Influential Women in Technology 2011 - Prerna Gupta @prernagupta Most young college grads don't mind putting in long hours to work on someone else's product. Consultant-turned-blogger and musician Prerna Gupta, however, is far too independent for that. Gupta began her career in management consulting, ostensibly to learn how to run a successful business. But after six months at Monitor Group, she found she was learning little more than "how to be a better consultant." After growing Yaari to more than 2 million users, Prerna set her sights on another rapidly growing industry--smartphone applications. It works like this: the user makes a recording of themselves singing, which the program then analyzes to generate background music in a variety of styles (ranging from "Rhythm Synth Pop" to "Dirty South Rap"). Gupta's still putting in long hours, but now it's to promote her own creations, which are ultimately designed to help others with theirs.

The Concept Of Wabi-Sabi, And Why Perfection Is The Wrong Goal We humans revere the best: the best coffee, the best cars, the best phones, the best apps, the best schools, the best doctors, the best chefs, the best companies, the best CEOs, the best athletes, the best coaches, the best designers, the best actors, the best movies, the best dresses, the best designers of the best dresses, the best directors of the best actresses wearing the best dresses, and that catch-all category: the best of the best doing what they do best. Moreover, it is insufficient for our reptilian brains to simply recognize the best; we must recognize them publicly. To highlight our admiration for excellence, we have human-engineered lists, ribbons and ceremonies; red carpets, awards, and shiny trophies; prizes, certifications, and halls of fame. We may be able to feed our hunger, but we simply cannot satiate our collective appetite for awesomeness. We live to revere ourselves. Of course, our pursuit of perfection makes perfect sense. Perfection has its place.

Cultivating Charisma: How Personal Magnetism Can Help (Or Hurt) You At Work As a socially inept teenager, Olivia Fox Cabane realized that she had two choices. “Either confine myself to a desert island, or learn how to make this human thing work,” she says. Cabane opted for the latter. Good thing. FAST COMPANY: So what is the myth of charisma and where did it come from? OLIVIA FOX CABANE: It came from the Greeks, who coined the word as “gift of grace.” So where did we get the idea that one needs to be outgoing and gregarious to be charismatic? A few things. For example? For “focus charisma,” which creates a cocoon around people and gets them to share everything, introversion is actually a key, critical component because you need to completely focus your attention on a person and listen attentively. What about the three other styles of charisma? There’s “authority charisma,” which is the most powerful form of charisma. And Steve Jobs? Exactly. The other type of charisma is “kindness,” which is what the Dalai Lama has. And this can all be backed up by science? Indeed.
