Canon 1-Ups Nikon with 70 Million Lenses in the Wild
Just yesterday, Nikon announced 65 million NIKKOR lenses have been produced. Now, a single day later, Canon announces production of 70 million lenses. Also, 50 millions EOS DSLRs are out there. That’s a pretty mild lens-to-camera ratio. Talk about gamesmanship… The full press release packed with nostalgia and bragging rights is below. Canon celebrates production of 50 million EOS SLR cameras, 70 million EF interchangeable lenses TOKYO, October 18, 2011—Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan Inc. announced today the achievement of two major manufacturing milestones: combined production of film and digital EOS-series single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras surpassed the 50-million mark in September this year, and the EF series of interchangeable lenses is expected to reach the 70-million-unit milestone later this month. 50 million EOS digital SLR cameras 70 million EF lenses Canon’s current EF-lens lineup, comprising 66 models,*2 ranges from super-wide-angle lenses to super-telephoto zoom lenses.

One man, 100,000 toothpicks, and 35 years: An incredible kinetic sculpture...
Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay, that he continues to modify and expand even today. The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. He admits in the video that there are several toothpick sculptures even larger than his, but none has the unique kinetic components he’s constructed. Via his website Weaver estimates he’s spent over 3,000 hours on the project, and the toothpicks have been sourced from around the world: I have used different brands of toothpicks depending on what I am building. I also have many friends and family members that collect toothpicks in their travels for me. See the sculpture for yourself at the Tinkering Studio through the end of June.

The Tunnel Of Love
Klevan is an urban-type settlement in the Rivne Raion of Rivne Oblast in western Ukraine. Its population is 7,470 as of the 2001 Ukrainian Census. Klevan is accessed via the T1B17 and H22 roads, and is located 28.3 km northwest of Rivne and 50.4 kilometres southeast of Lutsk along the H22. There’s a real place in the Ukraine that looks like this.
