Thoughts on Developing A Design Concept A good design begins with a good design concept. You’re trying to solve a problem and your concept will lead the way and give you direction for your design decisions. How do you form a concept? What questions do you need to ask in order to develop one? How does your concept become the roadmap for your design? What is a Design Concept? concept (n) – a general idea used to formulate a plan A design concept is the idea behind a design. Your concept will lead to your choices in color and type. Your design concept becomes the framework for all your design decisions. We can think of design concepts in two ways. Verbal – the verbal parts of your concept might be words you use to describe the site. Typically I begin forming a concept verbally (a process I’ll describe below). Generally verbal concepts come before visual concepts as the visual is really about how you’ll communicate the verbal, though it likely depends on the individual and how you think best. I recently toured a department store in South Korea. I found the traditional "white goods" most interesting: Refrigerators and washing machines. But while at the store, I marveled at the advance complexities of all appliances, especially ones that once upon a time were quite simple: for example, toasters, refrigerators, and coffee makers, all of which had multiple control dials, multiple LCD displays, and a complexity that defied description. Technology | BBC moves to file-sharing sites Hundreds of episodes of BBC programmes will be made available on a file-sharing network for the first time, the corporation has announced. The move follows a deal between the commercial arm of the organisation, BBC Worldwide, and technology firm Azureus. The agreement means that users of Azureus' Zudeo software in the US can download titles such as Little Britain. Until now, most BBC programmes found on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks have been illegal copies. Beth Clearfield, vice president of programme management and digital media at BBC Worldwide, said that the agreement was part of a drive to reach the largest audience possible. "We are very excited to partner with Azureus and make our content available through this revolutionary distribution model," she said.
