When California-based Clark Foam – the leading manufacturer of surfboard blanks – ran afoul of the Environmental Protection Agency in late 2005, owner Gordon “Grubby” Clark sent out a simple fax stating he was shutting his company down, effective immediately. The surfing world was devastated; Clark Foam’s blanks, the shaped polyurethane core of modern surfboards, had a virtual monopoly on America’s market, and his closure sent designers scurrying to fill orders in 2006. Now a year later, without the behemoth of Clark Foam, the industry has splintered, driving competition between businesses and pushing the boundaries of material science. The destruction of Clark Foam, while a short-term disaster, became a long-term benefit to the surfing industry, as new companies and new technologies took Clark’s place.
