The Greening of Gavin Apple Says Data Centers Now Use 100% Renewable Energy Apple Inc. (AAPL) now uses only renewable energy sources to power its data centers, the iPhone maker said in an updated report on its environmental policies. The company’s data centers now run on energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal, instead of coal or other fossil fuels, Apple said on its website. The centers house server computers that store and distribute songs, applications and other content from services such as iTunes, iMessage and iCloud. A year ago, Apple was targeted by Greenpeace International, which ranked Apple 12th out of 14 large technology companies in a report called “How Clean Is Your Cloud?” “Increasing our use of renewable energy is our primary objective,” Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s chief financial officer, said in an interview. Apple’s announcement shows “real progress,” Greenpeace said, urging the company disclose more detail on how it’s working with utilities and state governments to achieve its energy goals.

Leisure / Business Travel Packing List - Travel Light (One Bag)! Packing & Traveling Light Recommendations by Mark Verber The following page was originally written after my wife and I returned from a trip in the early 1990s doing international development & education. We each fit everything needed for multi-week trip into own carry on bag. This permitted our two check-through bags to be filled with educational materials that we would deliver to the project without paying shipping charges. Many of our colleagues brought a couple of huge bags for their own use. Traveling light by packing light has a number of advantages: You are often able to take all you luggage as carry-on. Remember the traveler's motto: It's better to bring half of what you think you need, and twice as much money. Luggage which is 7"x14"x20" will fit under nearly all commercial airplane seats, and is permitted as a carry-on bag on almost all airlines. In general I would recommend using a "travel pack" which is a cross between a backpack, and soft-side luggage. Osprey Farpoint 40: is now my favorite carry-on bag.

Later, when I started putting some of my other completed works up on the Web, I added several chapters from the "Traveler's Handbook" on my first (1995) edition of Randy's Travel Page. The original (1991, unpublished) hard-copy version had a number of my salty travel anecdotes and brief traveler's tales sprinkled around in side-bars. So, without further ado, here is the Introduction and ten highly detailed chapters of Third World Travel Tips, which cover most of what I've got to say about the subject.
