Tips and Tricks for Coding with NVivo Having worked with NVivo on a number of our own projects, as well as those of clients, we’ve discovered a few tips and tricks along the way that we thought might be useful to share. The tips are by no means the “right” way to code (there is no such thing!), but we’ve certainly found that we’ve saved ourselves some time, not to mention headaches, by following the suggestions below. Note that the following comments assume that you’re familiar with the concept of nodes in NVivo – if you need clarification of this please visit our ‘What is a node?’ FAQ. Less is More This generally useful principle can be applied to NVivo in two ways – firstly, try to avoid having too many nodes. The combination of the ease of use of NVivo and a tendency to want to code at quite specific categories, can actually result in an unmanageable number of nodes to work with. Here’s my response: I know of no open-source (software) tools dedicated to sentiment analysis. Instead, a variety of open-source text-analytics tools — natural-language processing for information extraction and classification — can be applied for sentiment analysis. They include – - Python NLTK (Natural Language Toolkit), but see also - R, TM (text mining) module, including tm.plugin.sentiment. - RapidMiner, - GATE, the General Architecture for Text Engineering, I bet someone’s doing sentiment with the Stanford NLP tools, although my understanding is the maximum-entropy classification isn’t the best approach for sentiment. DuBois, characterize the plight of African-American people before, during and after slavery (Bolden 2009). The Slaves knew that knowledge held the keys to freedom and the desire to learn to read was paramount in their lives. Whipping, maiming and being sold away from their families were punishments for reading or teaching someone else to read yet they sought out education at tremendous risk to themselves and their families. African-American Schools After the Civil War African-Americans firmly believed that literacy was the tool and symbol of liberation and equality in White society and as a result many schools for African American flourished after the Civil War as African Americans quickly moved to educate themselves and their children. How Schools Propagate The "Underclass" Graham Boyd in (2001) asserted that the “war on drugs” is the New Jim Crow. His use of this metaphor is to illustrate the erosion of rights African Americans are subjected to under this pernicious campaign. Moreover, many of the same rights fought for during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and the 19th Century by the abolitionist are being fought today because of this campaign Boyd opines. He predicted that by the year 2017, more black men would be under bondage than they were during the zenith of slavery in 1860. Michele Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow has been quoted as saying more black men are in prisons, probation and parole than they when they were enslaved. Much has been made in regards to the inimical impact hyperincarceration has on the African American community, especially the impact on African American males. Both authors make excellent cases in regards to how the prison system resembles Jim Crow in the way it circumvents rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
