Tips and Tricks for Coding with NVivo Having worked with NVivo on a number of our own projects, as well as those of clients, we’ve discovered a few tips and tricks along the way that we thought might be useful to share. The tips are by no means the “right” way to code (there is no such thing!), but we’ve certainly found that we’ve saved ourselves some time, not to mention headaches, by following the suggestions below. Note that the following comments assume that you’re familiar with the concept of nodes in NVivo – if you need clarification of this please visit our ‘What is a node?’ FAQ. Less is More This generally useful principle can be applied to NVivo in two ways – firstly, try to avoid having too many nodes. The combination of the ease of use of NVivo and a tendency to want to code at quite specific categories, can actually result in an unmanageable number of nodes to work with. Another application of the “less is more” principle is in regards to the amount of text to select when coding. Some NVivo Coding Quirks
Priority Schools Campaign What are the most powerful open-source sentiment-analysis tools? I took a stab at a Quora question, What are the most powerful open-source sentiment-analysis tools?. Here’s my response: I know of no open-source (software) tools dedicated to sentiment analysis. Instead, a variety of open-source text-analytics tools — natural-language processing for information extraction and classification — can be applied for sentiment analysis. They include – - Python NLTK (Natural Language Toolkit), but see also - R, TM (text mining) module, including tm.plugin.sentiment. - RapidMiner, - GATE, the General Architecture for Text Engineering, I bet someone’s doing sentiment with the Stanford NLP tools, although my understanding is the maximum-entropy classification isn’t the best approach for sentiment. Powerful, I can’t say. Like this:
PhD Wiki: The Use of Mapping in Literature Review Submitted to my supervisors February 2009Ammendments in red 1. Introduction 1.1 The Literature Review Literature review is a systematic method for identifying, evaluating and interpreting the work of researchers, scholars and practitioners in a chosen field (Fink, 1998). More specifically, Hart (1998; 13) describes how conducting a literature review requires: "The selection of available documents (both published and unpublished) on the topic, which contain information, ideas, data and evidence written from a particular standpoint to fulfil certain aims or express certain views on the nature of the topic and how it is to be investigated, and the effective evaluation of these documents in relation to the research being proposed" Boote and Beile (2005) suggest “a thorough, sophisticated review of literature is even more important in education research, with its messy, complex problems, than in most other fields and disciplines.” 1.2 Mapping 2. 2.1 Approaches to Mapping 2.2 Types of Mapping 4.
West Texas A&M University: The Journal of Multiculturalism in Education Vision Statement As is the case with all Internet based technologies used in education, it is hoped that all the strengths of this medium of communication will be brought to bear in the publishing of The Journal of Multiculturalism in Education. The Internet-based journal is not subject to the same limitations that have traditionally constrained printed journals. Chief among these limitations is that of the cost of paper. The other main strength to be gained through the use of electronic media is that of efficiency of communication. It is hoped that the use of electronic means of communication will significantly shorten the time needed to accomplish editorial review and (if merited) publishing of submitted manuscripts. Mission of the Journal Scope of the Journal The Journal of Multiculturalism in Education solicits the submission of manuscripts that take as their topic the full range of Multiculturally related issues in primary, secondary and higher education worldwide.
News analysis - trends tools online I need to do a rough and ready news analysis. I want to go to a specific news site and see the frequency of certain words and phrases before and after a certain date. Ideally, I'd be able to do this in a slightly more complex way, with combinations of words and phrases. I want to do this for free. Does such a tool exist? Say a particular politician was always considered a bit of a clown. Is this something that exists? (I know I saw something which did something similar developed by some American university.
African American teacher numbers need improvement | The Academy Speaks By James Ewers How do you become what you want to be? When you ask children what they want their life’s work to be, you will hear a variety of answers. They gain their perspectives obviously from a lot of sources. Parents, grandparents, other love providers, coaches and teachers are just a few of the resources that kids use as a basis for their responses. If a young child is around a person with a certain skill set then their first inclination is to say that I want to be like that particular person. My own career in education probably started with my high school history teacher, Mr. It also raises several questions for your review and consideration. Because I have some opinions and attitudes about each of these questions, I will share them with you. Racial diversity is just not good for people of color it is good for white people, too. African-American Education in the 19th Century "Of all the civil rights that the world has struggled and fought for, for five thousand years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental.” These words, spoken by W.E.B. DuBois, characterize the plight of African-American people before, during and after slavery (Bolden 2009). The Slaves knew that knowledge held the keys to freedom and the desire to learn to read was paramount in their lives. Whipping, maiming and being sold away from their families were punishments for reading or teaching someone else to read yet they sought out education at tremendous risk to themselves and their families. African-American Schools After the Civil War African-Americans firmly believed that literacy was the tool and symbol of liberation and equality in White society and as a result many schools for African American flourished after the Civil War as African Americans quickly moved to educate themselves and their children. How Schools Propagate The "Underclass" Graham Boyd in (2001) asserted that the “war on drugs” is the New Jim Crow. His use of this metaphor is to illustrate the erosion of rights African Americans are subjected to under this pernicious campaign. Moreover, many of the same rights fought for during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and the 19th Century by the abolitionist are being fought today because of this campaign Boyd opines. He predicted that by the year 2017, more black men would be under bondage than they were during the zenith of slavery in 1860. Michele Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow has been quoted as saying more black men are in prisons, probation and parole than they when they were enslaved. Much has been made in regards to the inimical impact hyperincarceration has on the African American community, especially the impact on African American males. Both authors make excellent cases in regards to how the prison system resembles Jim Crow in the way it circumvents rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

AFRICAN HOLOCAUST | The Mis-education of the Black Child The Southern Response In Harpers Weekly Magazine in 1874, a cartoonist named Thomas Nast drew a cartoon which demonstrated the South’s temperament concerning the education of newly freed African-Americans. The illustration depicted two African people kneeling down holding a baby and two armed white men standing over them. In the background of the cartoon lay a schoolbook and a burning school, while an ex-slave is being lynched. This cartoon reflected the national psyche of America at that time in world history. Anderson writes: It is crucial for an understanding of American educational history, however, to recognize that within American democracy there have been classes of oppressed people and there have been essential relationships between popular education and the politics of oppression. The Northern Answer At another time and place another luminary was being developed by the name of W.E.B. Dubois and Washington presented two distinct programs for Black people in America. For some black students, failing is safer For some black students, failing is safer Many who strive to do well often face peers who call them "too white' Thursday, May 28, 1998 BY MARK CURNUTTE The Cincinnati Enquirer For as long as she can remember, Carrie Lucas has kept her guard up around white people. The 17-year-old Taft High School junior says it's no secret that a lot of whites don't want African-Americans to succeed. But at 14, she was shocked to learn that a lot of blacks didn't want her to succeed either. Since she began achieving high grades as a freshman three years ago, the Mount Auburn teen has endured a stream of verbal harassment from some of her African-American peers. "It was always, "Why are you trying to be white? It's the time of year when schools recognize academic accomplishments at honors assemblies and graduation ceremonies. The putdown equates academic achievement with "selling out" and "trying to be white." The program has already started in 20 of the Urban League's 115 chapters. In differernt worlds
