Enligt ämnesplanen är undervisningens syfte att lära sig att arbeta matematiskt. Eleverna ska lära sig strategier för att använda matematik i både vardagen och yrkeslivet. Idag kräver branschen att deras medarbetare inte bara har goda praktiska kunskaper utan även har grundläggande kunskaper i matematik. Ett annat syfte med matematik på yrkesprogrammen är den överenskommelse som har gjorts mellan flera länder i Europa (Bryggekommunikén, 2010) som innebär att länderna ska sträva efter att utbildningssystemen ger goda möjligheter att under flera gånger i livet ändra yrkesinriktning.
