Transformer son Territoire Les Forums Citoyens se distinguent des formes classiques de rassemblements par leur architecture fondée sur l’autogestion des participants (temps, thématiques des ateliers, élaboration des plans d’action…). Le samedi et le dimanche furent tout aussi denses, riches en émotion, et ancrés dans l'action. Le forum s’est tenu au cœur d’un festival co-organisé par la Ferme du Buisson et Colibris. Si on en juge par les sourires et l’émotion de l’ensemble des participants, ces deux journées de forum furent un grand moment de partage, de joie, de coopération, et d'action !

Changhuei Yang, a professor of electrical engineering, bioengineering and medical engineering at Caltech, announced the breakthrough Sunday in an article published in Nature Photonics. Traditonally, increasing the magnification power in a microscope meant stacking more lens elements inside, pushing up cost and forcing scientists to choose between high resolution or a wide field of view, Yang explained. The CIT system takes multiple low-resolution images of a subject, each corresponding to a single light in an LED array below the sample. That way, the a computer has information from light hitting the sample at different angles when it stitches the images together into a composite with resolution of up to a billion pixels.

Self-Igniting Fire Starter I am always on the lookout for a new fire starter, and when I find a new idea, of course I have to try it out! Well I have found a new interesting concept and I thought I might share my attempt with it. It is a fire starter that has an ignition source, an accelerent, and fuel, all in one. And an additional benefit is they are waterproof! I can’t take the credit for this idea as I saw it a few months ago on a YouTube video by the “intenseangler”. In the video, the small Strike Anywhere matches are used, which requires that the toilet paper you wrap around it be cut into thirds. I will, as usual, use a photo format to explain what I did as it is easier to understand by seeing the process. The first thing I did was get a double boiler going to melt some paraffin. I got out a box of the Large Kitchen Strike Anywhere matches. I cut the toilet paper squares in half using scissors. As you can see, the toilet paper covers all of the match stick except the head. Well there you have it.

And far from just making phone calls, cell phones let us take pictures, send text messages, and even watch movies. But now a UCLA engineer has come up with an entirely new way to use cell phones. He took a regular cell phone, around $10 worth of off-the-shelf parts, and software that he wrote himself to make the world’s first cell phone microscope. He hopes it can be used in remote locations to diagnose diseases when getting to a hospital for tests just isn’t possible. Aydogan Ozcan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at UCLA, has formed a company called Microskia to develop and market the technology.
