The Lure of the Fairy Tale In Grimms’ Fairy Tales there is a story called “The Stubborn Child” that is only one paragraph long. Here it is, in a translation by the fairy-tale scholar Jack Zipes: Once upon a time there was a stubborn child who never did what his mother told him to do. The dear Lord, therefore, did not look kindly upon him, and let him become sick. This story, with its unvarnished prose, should be clear, but it isn’t. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born to a prosperous couple (the father was a lawyer), Jacob in 1785, Wilhelm in 1786. The Grimms grew up in the febrile atmosphere of German Romanticism, which involved intense nationalism and, in support of that, a fascination with the supposedly deep, pre-rational culture of the German peasantry, the Volk. Two things sustained the Grimms. That was their other lodestar: their work. There are two varieties of fairy tales. In the Grimms’ time, industrialization was starting to simplify or eliminate certain domestic chores. Much of this was not true. W.

Try this exercise: A) Take some song you like — any song at all from any era, any style — just so long as it is familiar to you. B) Write a new lyric to that song. C) Take that new lyric and write completely new music to it. D) Edit. (Or you could do A-C-B-D — write the new music to the “scaffold” song and then write a new lyric.) What remains is a new song with only a hint of the “ghost” song that acted as a scaffold for the process. Listmaking Out of ideas? A list could become a song (remember “My Favorite Things” or Tom T Hall’s “I Love...”) or could be a starting pad for an essay song, enumerating facts or feelings. Thanks, I’ll have to fix that. The first and last chords of the progression are not 7th chords. Somehow I inadvertently typed “I7″ on the first chord of all the major keys. (Notice that I didn’t do that for the minor keys.) In the classical tradition, for the sake of stability, the first and last chords of a circle-of-fifths progression are usually triads, not 7th chords. Harmonic Sequences Part 2 In the jazz tradition all chords usually are 7ths, in which case the progression will start and end with 7th chords. Thanks again for your interest and input.
USB_CHARGE USB to Nokia Safe Charger This simple project shows you how to make a USB powered Nokia cell phone charger. The advantage is that it weighs much less than the bulky AC adaptor, and can be used wherever you have a computer or a laptop. I use this thing all the time now! What do I mean by “safe charger”? So far, it charges my phone just fine, but slightly slower than the wall wart that came with it. DISCLAIMEROID STATEMENTEY THING: Ok, so here’s the deal: You can really mess things up with this project! Step one: strip off the shielding and insulation on an inch or so of the usb cable. Step two: Clip off a length of the nokia chargers phone-side plug. Step three: Attach a normal silicon diode (not a zener diode) with the line part towards the nokia plug. I suggest staggering the lengths of the wires so that the solder joints have less chance of coming into contact. Check all the wires with a multimeter to make sure they are really the right ones!
