Colter the Mountain Man Forrest Hancock and Joseph Dickson were camping on the Missouri River above the Mandan villages when William Clark's party stopped and visited them on August 11, 1806. Four days later, after his and Lewis's party had been reunited, the two trappers returned to the Mandan villages, where they invited John Colter to join them. The three men turned back up the Missouri on August 17. They made it to the Yellowstone country, but the three-way partnership lasted only six weeks before Hancock and Colter together parted from Dickson. John Colter John Colter (c.1770-1775 – May 7, 1812 or November 22, 1813) was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806). Though party to one of the more famous expeditions in history, Colter is best remembered for explorations he made during the winter of 1807–1808, when he became the first known person of European descent to enter the region which later became Yellowstone National Park and to see the Teton Mountain Range. Colter spent months alone in the wilderness and is widely considered to be the first known mountain man.[1] Early life[edit] John Colter was born in Stuarts Draft, Augusta County, Colony of Virginia, 1774 based on assumptions by his family.[2] The Colter family patriarch Micajah Coalter is believed to have migrated from Ireland in 1700. There is some debate as to which variation of the family name, Coalter, Coulter, or Colter, is correct and the issue was further convoluted by Captain William Clark utilizing all three spelling variations during his daily journals.

Panama is the narrowest landmass between the two oceans. The canal consists of three locks and dams that enable passage of ships from Port of Cristobal on the Atlantic to Port of Balboa on the Pacific.
