High-achieving teenagers | LearnEnglish Teens | British Council Presenter: Next on the programme we have an interview with someone who has been writing a book about high-achieving teenagers. Welcome, Louise Hardy.Louise: Hi, it’s lovely to be here.Presenter: Louise, many of these teenagers who have achieved success and fame early on, have done so through using new technology, haven’t they? Through blogging or using YouTube or Twitter?Louise: Absolutely, and the greatest example of this is Justin Bieber. As I think everyone on the planet knows, he started off by posting videos on YouTube at the age of 14 and was spotted by a talent scout who worked with the R&B singer Usher. After that he very rapidly became a worldwide sensation.Presenter: I heard that last year he was said to be more influential than Obama!

STEP 1: Select Insert > Online Pictures (In Outlook, when you're using the Reading pane, there isn't an Insert menu. and then you'll see the Insert menu.) STEP 2: Type a word or phrase to describe what you're looking for, then press Enter. STEP 3: Filter the results by Type for Clipart. STEP 4: Select a picture. STEP 5: Select Insert. That's it! The image is inserted in your Office document. Clip art and copyright The licensing filter (Creative Commons only or All) can help you choose images that are appropriate for the use you have in mind. When using pictures or clip art from Bing, you're responsible for respecting copyright, and the license filter in Bing can help you choose which images to use. The Best Sites For Free ESL/EFL Hand-Outs & Worksheets There are tons of places on the Internet where you can find ESL/EFL hand-outs and worksheets of varied quality and varied cost. You can find a very long list of them on my website under ESL Hand-Outs And Lesson Plans. I thought a “The Best…” list highlighting the sites that I thought were best might be useful to readers. This is sort of a companion list to The Best Resource Sites For ESL/EFL Teachers. In order to make it on this list, the site needed to have a large quantity of high-quality resources available — free of charge — for printing-out. Many ESL/EFL textbooks have most of the same information that these hand-outs and worksheets offer. * I’ve found that many teacher-created worksheets are just plain better at helping students learn than the textbooks I have seen, so they are excellent supplements. * Since students can’t write in most textbooks, unless it’s a “consumable,” worksheets are good materials for students to annotate. English Teaching Forum Volume 53, Number 4 The phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” indicates that a complex idea can be communicated by a single image. We might spend an hour reading an article about the devastating effects an oil spill has on wildlife ecology. But a photograph of an oil-drenched pelican gasping for air evokes in us an instant emotional response. Indeed, cognitive research has shown that the human brain processes images quicker than it processes words, and images are more likely than text to remain in our long-term memory (Levie and Lentz 1982). What if we slow down this image-viewing process to unpack those thousand words that underlie each picture? However, these digital natives are not intuitively adept at analyzing and critiquing images, skills that can be considered part of visual literacy (Brumberger 2011). Communicative language classrooms are an ideal location to cultivate the visual literacy skills involved in viewing and creating images. What is visual literacy? Meaningful oral interaction 1.
