DIY Proenza Schouler Scroll Necklace Were you blown away by Proenza Schouler‘s entire Fall 2011 Collection as much as we were? The juxtaposition of digitalized and geometric Native American inspired prints with decorative, Victorian-like statement necklaces was all kinds of genius. And of course, the jewelry had the wheels in our DIY minds spinning ever since. You’ll need: The hardest part of this project is finding decorative mouldings that are small enough to use. Lay the mouldings on a wooden block and carefully drill holes through each marking. In a well ventilated area, spray an even coat of flat black paint over the mouldings and charms. DIY Bleach Tie Dye Last summer, we were obsessed with shibori indigo tie dying. No, really . . . we just about dyed anything white in sight. So when Free People asked us to include a DIY in their guest blogger series, we knew a new tie dye project was absolutely in order. And as the weather is beginning to warm up, what better time than now to start experimenting with reverse tie dye using bleach! To make a grid-like pattern, fold the shirt like an accordion and bind it between two pieces of wood or other flat shaped objects. Before you start bleaching, make sure you are wearing gloves and working outdoors or in a well ventilated area. DIY No Knit Scarf We love Rike Feurstein. Her hats are sick and her chunky knits are lusciously bold and amazing. And when we saw her Dylan scarf, we thought it was genius. A scarf that didn’t require knitting? You’ll start by transforming a skein of yarn into a hank of yarn, which is yarn that is loosely wound into a large ring shape and then twisted. Cut 3 pieces of leather at approximately 1.75″ wide and 4″ long. Voila! (top image from here, rest of images by Honestly…WTF) DIY Minaudière I have an awful habit of losing sunglasses. Needless to say, I’ve accumulated an impressive collection of sunglass cases over the years. Recently we’ve discovered that these abandoned containers can easily by re-purposed into fabulous mini clutches! Inspired by those spotted during Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks, we made a super simple minaudière with just a few tools and a fancy piece of hardware. DIY Lace Shorts A few weeks ago, our friend Katie showed up wearing the cutest lace trimmed shorts. We were impressed to discover that not only did she DIY them, she made them using boxer shorts! We immediately raced to Target for white boxer shorts and the fabric store for a variety of pretty white lace trims. You’ll need:men’s or boy’s white boxer shorts2 yards of lace trima pair of scissorspinsa sewing machine or needle and thread Pin the lace trim along the inside hem of the shorts, starting at the seam of the inner leg. DIY Bolo Tie Many years ago, we might have shunned the idea of wearing bolos but nowadays we couldn’t be more obsessed with these western neckties! Worn pulled up against a buttoned up collared shirt or loose as a necklace, bolos are our must have accessory of the moment. Inspired by recent street style sightings, magazine editorials, and a few designers who have embraced this western inspired trend, we put together an easy bolo tie tutorial that we hope you’ll love. Start by cutting about 1/3 of the cork off, lengthwise. Drill two holes at an angle on the top side of the cork, exiting out the same centered hole on the opposite side. Run the drill through the holes a few times in order to clean out any excess cork. Thread both ends of the cord through the open acorn nut, using a safety pin to help thread it through. DIY Color Block Moccasins Our love of Minnatonka moccasins and obsession with Balenciaga‘s Fall 2010 shoes made this DIY we created for Foam Magazine a no brainer. With just a tube of Tulip Soft Fabric Paint, a pair of paintbrushes (one thin and one thick) and a pair of suede moccasins, you’ll be ready to make your own color block shoes. (Tulip Soft Fabric Paint is best paint to use, as it is highly opaque, flexible once it dries and great for suede.) To paint the tops of the moccasins, the fringe will have to be tucked under. Start by making a test patch near one of the holes, as this part will be covered and it’s a great way to get comfortable with your brush and paint. Let dry for at least 2 hours and reassemble the fringe to reveal your new pair of SICK color block mocs! (images by Honestly…WTF)
DIY Rope Bracelet Climbing rope? Bracelets? Count us in. Before you begin, seal the tips of the cord by burning them with a lighter. Coil the cord twice around towards the left loop. Repeat the same steps on the other side. Trim and re-burn the tips if necessary. Try making the bracelets with leather cord too. (top image from here; rest of images from Honestly…WTF) DIY Ombré Denim Dip dyed ombré denim has been popping up here and there and not only do we love the look, it’s super easy to do yourself! We’ve combined Tory Burch‘s dip dyed jeans and Miss Unkon‘s ombré 501s as inspiration for a pink infused DIY that could be done in a jiffy. Start by rinsing your shorts with water. A bottle of RIT liquid dye amounts to 1 cup; you’ll dye your shorts with the lightest shade first and darkest shade last. Pour 1/3 of the cup of dye into 2 gallons of hot water and mix. Ring out the excess dye and add another 1/3 cup of dye to your bucket. It’s that easy: ombré dip dyed denim shorts!
DIY Box Braid Necklace The moment we saw Phillip Lim‘s Box Braid Collar Necklace, we were immediately overcome with a wave of nostalgia. Our memories of a neon, plastic box braid lanyard was suddenly transformed into a sophisticated leather jewelry component. Honestly, brilliant! Inspired by our fondness of Lim’s necklace and our love of utilizing hardware, we made our own interpretation of a box braid necklace. And in case you forgot how to make your favorite childhood summertime craft, take a trip down memory lane with us! Start by cutting the suede in 4 three-yard pieces. Repeat the box braid until you are ready to add washers to the necklace. Once the necklace is finished, trim the ends. Wear it as a necklace, wrap bracelet or even a headband!
