Capitol Couture The Eleventh Plague- Jeff Hirsch "The Hunger Games" breaks pre-sale records - Celebrity Circuit (CBS News) "The Hunger Games" is already breaking records, and it hasn't even opened in theaters yet. Fandango announced Tuesday that the film, based on Suzanne Collins' wildly popular novel, has sold more advance tickets than any other non-sequel ever. Pictures: "The Hunger Games" premierePictures: "The Hunger Games" character posters The movie tickets website said more than 2,000 showtimes for "The Hunger Games" have already sold out, according to Entertainment Weekly. The film also accounts for more than 92 percent of Fandango's daily sales. "The Hunger Games," directed by Gary Ross and starring Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss Everdeen, will be released on Friday. The film is expected to open big at the box office. That could give "The Hunger Games" an even bigger opening than the most recent "Twilight" film, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," which brought in $138.1 million during its first weekend back in November. Counterpoint Review: 'The Hunger Games' Is A Tired, Overlong Blockbuster Lacking Flair & Imagination With "The Hunger Games" arriving in theaters this weekend and expected to blow up the box office, early reviews have been very positive and anticipation has been running high. Our own review called it "an engaging, thoughtful, populist piece of entertainment that transcends gender, genre or source material." But not everyone in The Playlist camp felt the same. Here's a counterpoint review of the film, that offers up a wholly different assessment of the upcoming franchise starter. The word “tribute” carries several loaded meanings. In “The Hunger Games,” it is that age-old plot device, the blood sacrifice. Civilizations are back to simpler, more primitive times. Into town comes the Hunger Games committee. As we soon learn, the Hunger Games have been going on for seventy-three years now, each year yielding a new people’s champion from each District. Katniss’ reluctance to be the poster child for the Hunger Games at first seems like a genuine show of individuality.

Everlost - Neal Shusterman Everfound Review From Kirkus Reviews Shusterman ends his provocative trilogy with a rock-solid adventure that manages to examine deep questions of faith and morality. At the end of Everwild (2009), Nick the Chocolate Ogre had dissolved into a mass of chocolate pudding, Mary Hightower was asleep in a glass coffin waiting to be reborn, Allie the Outcast was strapped to the front of a runaway train and Mikey McGill (formerly the monstrous McGill) was searching for a way to rescue her. Rich in detail, with exceptional characterization and shot through with unexpected (and very necessary) humor, this is an engrossing and thoroughly satisfying ending to a unique saga of life after death. The Bookbag Everfound Review Everlost Video Gallery Everlost Discussion Guide Everwild Description Everlost, the limbo land of dead children, is at war. Meanwhile, Allie the Outcast travels home to seek out her parents, along with Mikey, who was once the terrifying monster the McGill. Everwild Review

The Hunger Games All Critics (275) | Top Critics (46) | Fresh (232) | Rotten (43) | DVD (4) The film shows precious little hunger and no sense of game. Even when two people are just talking calmly, Ross jerks the camera around. Why? Ross manages to keep the pacing remarkably swift, given that the games themselves don't start until halfway through the 144-minute running time. Like the select participants of its savage sport, The Hunger Games stands triumphant, if scarred and a bit wobbly from the contest. It features a functioning creative imagination and lots of honest-to-goodness acting by its star, Jennifer Lawrence, who brings her usual toughness and emotional transparency to the archer-heroine Katniss. Watching The Hunger Games, I was struck both by how slickly Ross hit his marks and how many opportunities he was missing to take the film to the next level -- to make it more shocking, lyrical, crazy, daring. Though not at all innovative or original, is at least a worthwhile action fantasy.

'Hunger Games' frenzy surpasses 'Twilight' By Dave Rosenthal 12:47 p.m. EDT, March 21, 2012 With the wide release of "The Hunger Games" movie in little more than a day, ticket sales are headed for a record, as fans across the country prepare for the biggest literary adaptation since the Harry Potter and Twilight films. The movie about post-apocalyptic North America is on track to become the biggest seller for the on-line ticket site Fandango, according to The Baltimore Sun's Jill Rosen. Interestingly, nearly half of the tickets are being purchased by people older than 25, the article notes. The Harry Potter and Twilight books, ostensibly aimed at a young readers, were quickly snapped up by adults, and the same phenomenon can be seen with Suzanne Collins' trilogy. That all bodes well for the movie -- and others that surely will follow -- as well as book sales. We've upgraded our reader commenting system.
