Black Viper’s Windows XP Super Tweaks Black Viper’s Top tweaks for a faster PC The following is what I do directly after a clean install of Windows XP. This does not mean that everything I do will work for you. Keeping that in mind and ensure you are fully aware of the risks of tweaking your system before doing so. Point to note: Ensure that you are logged in as an “Administrator” or have Administrator rights before performing any of these steps. Even though I do these steps directly after a clean install, all of them can be done at any time. Before posting your question in the comments below, see if your question has been addressed in the FAQ! Number One: System Restore and Indexing Services This is valid for Windows XP Home and Pro. If you are experiencing “random” slowdowns and “high” CPU usage for no reason, these two services are the most likely cause of the problem. For an easy method of creating multiple Service Configurations, please check out my Windows XP Services Profile Guide. With the default Category Control Panel:
Group Policy XPerience In-Depth Group Policy XPerience You can do more with Group Policy in Windows XP than in Windows 2000 Professional. Here’s a guide to the changes. ARE YOU REAPING the benefits of Group Policy yet? Or, will your perfect Win2K Group Policy utopia all fall apart when you introduce your first Windows XP Professional client machine? If you’re happily deploying Group Policy to Win2K clients, then you’ll be well poised to also deploy it to your XP clients. New! When you upgrade your desktop to XP, you’ll find the tools inside the Adminpak.msi won’t work. Just What You Need—200 More Group Policy Settings Since XP has more features than Win2K Pro, it stands to reason there’s more “stuff” that can be controlled using Group Policy. The good news is that if you apply a policy meant for XP on a Win2K Pro machine, the policy is simply ignored. Recall that Win2K Group Policies are initially applied at startup (for Computer policies) and at logon (for User policies).
Important and Useful Windows Applications You Didn’t Know You Already Had: Microsoft Management Consoles I have the impression that Microsoft doesn’t really trust the average PC user. Windows tucks away a lot of system tools in obscure places. These tools aren’t listed in the All Programs menu and you have to hunt them down in Control Panel or already know about them before you can find them. Among these are a group of system applications called "Microsoft Management Consoles" (MMC). Depending on your system, there are around two to three dozen of these utilities. MMC consoles have the extension .msc and can be run by entering the console file name in a command prompt or the Run line. In this tip, I will point out the MMC that I consider the most useful for general use. You can see from the figure that some commonly used utilities and functions are listed. There you have it—an easy way to access some handy system tools. Get your own favorite tip published! This tips section is maintained by Vic Laurie. Click here for more items like this.

Enjoy life!
Internet Connection Firewall Windows ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) is the built-in firewall in Windows XP, both the Home and Professional editions. ICF is an excellent personal firewall and will prevent most attacks from the Internet. However, the lack of granular control makes ICF much too restrictive for power users. ICF Overview ICF is a stateful packet filter. The ICF ruleset can be modified manually by configuring “services” or programmatically by using the ICF API. Besides manual configuration of the ruleset, ICF contains an API that allows applications to temporarily modify the ruleset. This is both a good and scary feature. Finally, ICF has some additional checks besides the standard stateful packet filtering, such as: It enforces a 3-way handshake – this is useful to prevent special scanning techniques. For Microsoft’s official overview of ICF, refer to Microsoft Technet's Internet Connection Firewall overview. Putting ICF Under Attack Tools We used the following tools for testing: Methodology and Results
