David Zinn’s Quirky Chalk and Charcoal Characters on the Streets of Ann Arbor Since 1987, artist and illustrator David Zinn has stalked the streets of Ann Arbor, Michigan, creating temporary illustrations with chalk and charcoal. Zinn improvises each piece on the spot and makes use of found objects, street fixtures, and stairsteps to create trompe l’oeil illusions. These are some of our favorite pieces from the last few months, but you can see plenty more on Facebook and in his 2013 book Lost & Unfounded: Street Art by David Zinn.
THE TEN | BEYOND BY LEXUS Magazine There’s nothing modest about the new Momofuku restaurant complex in downtown Toronto. Opened last fall next to the new Shangri-La Hotel, the four-restaurants-in-one Momofuku Toronto is a triplex tribute to Korean-American chef David Chang’s pan-Asian epicurean ambitions. Fronted by floor-to-ceiling glass walls, Momofuku owes its exterior architecture to Vancouver’s James K. M. Cheng and interiors to Toronto-based The Design Agency. Anchored in cast concrete, white oak and glass, Momofuku is divided into four discrete spaces spread over three floors: steamed buns and ramen noodles in the casual, first-floor Noodle Bar; the Nikai bar and lounge on the second floor; the third-floor 80-seat Daisho for full-size meals; and Shoto, with just 22 seats. Though unified by The Design Agency’s singular aesthetic, each Momofuku space offers a unique experience.

Grupo Corpo boldly bares the rhythms of its Brazilian roots When you are a dancer growing up in Belo Horizonte, a city by the mountains in Brazil’s southeast, there can really be only one company you dream of performing with. Grupo Corpo, the country’s biggest contemporary-dance troupe and one of its best-known cultural exports, is based there, far away from the beaches and glitz of larger metropolises like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. “Since I was born here in Belo Horizonte, I have this respect for Grupo Corpo,” dancer Rafael Bittar explains to the Straight from a tour stop in California, near Stanford University. “Yes, it is isolated; the notion is the centre of the culture is São Paulo and Rio, but Grupo Corpo has taken a very important place in the culture of the country.” In that regard, Grupo Corpo has achieved its biggest goal. When brothers Paulo and Rodrigo Pederneiras founded the troupe in 1975, it was in reaction to the old colonial art forms, especially ballet, then dominating the cultural landscape.
Master of Pen and Ink: The Monumental Drawings of Ikeda Manabu History of Rise and Fall. 6.5′ x 6.5′, pen & acrylic ink History of Rise and Fall, detail Ark. 3′ x 4′, pen & acrylic ink Ark, detail Regeneration Foretoken. 6′ x 11′, pen & acrylic ink Foretoken, detail The task of Japanese artist Ikeda Manabu is seemingly impossible: a blank paper canvas larger than a person spread before him, a small acrylic pen in his hand, and hundreds of days to fill with faintly imperceptible progress from a mind brimming with explosive creativity. Manabu’s most recent work, Meltdown, which explores the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake was recently on view at the West Vancouver Museum, and next month will embark on a 10 by 13 foot panel in Madison, Wisconsin which the artist estimates will take upward of three years to complete. You can learn more over at Hi-Fructose, which sat down with the artist for an exclusive interview earlier this month.
