Tutorial Outpost – Photoshop Tutorials, Flash Tutorials, and more! Reader Tutorial: Mixing Brushes and Layers in Photoshop by Josh Overton Following our series of Reader Tutorials, Josh Overton, a graphic designer from Bristol UK will show us how to create a really cool design mixing simple layering techniques with custom brushes using Photoshop. If you want to contribute with your tutorial just let us know, send us a preview via email to abduzeedo@abduzeedo.com Step 1 To start with, open a new document in Photoshop with the dimensions 3508x4961 pixels and a resolution of 300 pixels/inch. Step 2 Then using the custom brushes, you can download them here, with the colour #010207 (which is just off black) and setting the flow and opacity down a little you can start to build up something similar to the below image. Step 3 With the custom brushes try to use these settings in the brushes toolbar with different brushes and at different sizes to help create a random effect so your brush doesn't look like a single stroke. Step 4 Now hide that layer and create a new layer. Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Step 9 Step 10 Step 11 Almost done now.
First rule of marketing It's hardly a secret that photos are often heavily retouched before publication, but it's relatively rare that a source image is available, allowing direct comparison with the final version. Here's a particularly blatant example. The image on the left is a studio photograph of Keira Knightley, taken for use in material promoting her recent film, 'King Arthur'. On the right the same photo is incorporated into a poster. I've slightly blurred the backgrounds, for clarity. I don't know who holds copyright, but I found these images at a fan site after seeing lower-res copies elsewhere. Some have expressed doubt that they really are the same image, or that only the head is the same, superimposed onto a different body. A few changes are uncontroversial: the image has been rotated through 4.3° to improve the overall composition. However, the main changes go beyond 'accentuating'. I'll let others decide on the aesthetics, ethics or even necessity of this manipulation.

Original Image Before we begin, download the image that we will be working with. Step 1 Using the content aware tool on different images produces different results. Step 2 We are extracting the person on the left from this photo. Notice in the image below how far I am drawing the path from the subject. Step 3 Once you complete the path around the subject, turn it into a selection. A dialog box will pop-up, make sure the feathering is set to 0px. Step 4 Now we have an active selection around our subject. A dialog box will pop-up, make sure the Content Aware option is selected. Step 5
