The best photographs of 2016 - in pictures | Art and design Boy on a bike at the Qayyarah oilfields (21 October)Carl Court/Getty Images I had heard the oilfields were on fire in Qayyarah, Iraq, and spent hours driving to get there. When I finally arrived, there was a strange atmosphere in the town – it felt dangerous and volatile, like anything could happen. My fixer said he was worried, that it didn’t feel right, and when a local guy like him is saying he doesn’t feel safe, you have to listen. We agreed to spend only 10 minutes on the ground, so I set my stopwatch and started snapping. I was shooting the huge plumes of black smoke that were billowing up hundreds of feet into the air and hovering above, shrouding us in darkness. Just then, along came this boy on his bike. President Obama meets president-elect Donald Trump in the Oval Office (10 November)Win McNamee/Getty Images The next morning, along with almost 30 other photographers and reporters, I was piling through the narrow doorway of the Oval Office where the two were seated.

The Longest Photographic Exposures in History - The Latest - itchy i The tremendous popularity of this article with more than half a million (!) clicks in one month inspired me to contact the artist Michael Wesely himself. I felt there were questions by readers which I couldn't answer correctly without talking to Michael. And I also wanted to tell him how much his worked was loved and how many people saw it as an inspiration for their own works and lives. From the many comments I learned, that many of you were astonished by the beauty of the images but also by the technical aspects of their making. But Michael confirmed that he indeed created continuous, uninterrupted exposures over those long periods of time. Michael Wesely, Palast der Republik, Berlin (28.6.2006 - 19.12.2008), © Michael Wesely, Michael wanted to highlight that he also sees those lines as an indicator for something else. His works were truly a hard and long labour of love. It took Michael months and months of experimenting to make sure the negatives weren't going to be over-exposed.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC How to Buy (and What's Inside) a Digital SLR Camera Single Lens Reflex (SLR) is a complicated term for a complicated machine. It refers to the prism and flip-up "reflex" mirror system that allows users to accurately focus and frame their shots directly through a camera's optics, rather than through a separate viewfinder. Until recently, most SLRs were the province of pros, requiring experience and training to master. But the digital era has created a new, growing class of consumer-grade digital SLR (DSLR) cameras that are easier to learn and use, yet still deliver pro-level photos. These days, the most complicated aspect of DSLR cameras is figuring out which one fits your needs. 1. Like most digital point-and-shoot cameras, digital SLRs have LCD displays--the largest of which are 3 in., diagonally. 2. DSLRs have image sensors that are 10 to 20 times the size of sensors on point-and-shoot cameras. 3. 4. Long battery life is critical for DSLRs, which have lots of motors and powerful flashes. 5. 6. 7 Lens + Autofocus + Image Stabilization

10 Things Henri Cartier-Bresson Can Teach You About Street Photography Don’t forget to pre-order the new re-print of “The Decisive Moment” by Henri Cartier-Bresson! I have been doing quite a bit of research into Henri Cartier-Bresson, the godfather of street photography. Although my current approach in street photography is more like Bruce Gilden and less of Henri Cartier-Bresson, HCB influenced much of my earlier work and I still deeply respect his photography and philosophies. I hope you are able to enjoy these things I believe you can learn from Henri Cartier-Bresson about street photography. Keep reading to become inspired and learn more. 1. If you look at the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, he applied geometry to his images poetically. Don’t only see the world as it is, look for shapes and geometry that occur naturally as well. 2. When Henri Cartier-Bresson would talk about “The Decisive Moment” he said sometimes it would be spontaneous but others times he had to be patient and wait for it. 3. 4. Apply the same mentality to when you go out and shoot. 5.

8 Unique Ways You Can Volunteer And Make A Difference Against an uncertain and somewhat depressing backdrop, it's sometimes easy to think we can't make a difference. But whether it's visiting an elderly housebound woman for a chat once a week or helping children from a deprived area read and write, there's no doubt that volunteering can have a major impact on someone's life, and is integral to society. Many of us are socially conscious, with more than a quarter (27%) of British women volunteering at least once a month, according to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). Whether you're looking to reduce stress (research shows that volunteering helps combat depression), make new friends or just wish to get stuck in and help out more in the community, we've outlined eight different – and super flexible – ways you can get involved. 10 Top Photography Composition Rules There are no fixed rules in photography, but there are guidelines which can often help you to enhance the impact of your photos. It may sound clichéd, but the only rule in photography is that there are no rules. However, there are are number of established composition guidelines which can be applied in almost any situation, to enhance the impact of a scene. These guidelines will help you take more compelling photographs, lending them a natural balance, drawing attention to the important parts of the scene, or leading the viewer's eye through the image. Once you are familiar with these composition tips, you'll be surprised at just how universal most of them are. Rule of Thirds Imagine that your image is divided into 9 equal segments by 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines. Doing so will add balance and interest to your photo. Notice how the building and horizon are aligned along rule-of-thirds lines. Balancing Elements Leading Lines The road in this photo draws your eye through the scene. Depth
